When I was young college student and aspiring soccer referee I lived with my uncle who was a die hard Mariners fan. Whenever the M's had bases loaded, he'd always run and turn on his radio just so he could hear Dave Niehaus and his "Grand Salami" call. And he'd always do this little dance going "salami salami salami".

He died a few years ago. Never got to see his M's in the World Series.

When the M's loaded the bases and Suarez came up, I felt compelled to get up and do a little dance, going "salami salami salami".

Should the sides agree on a contract, Vitello would become the first manager in major league history to jump directly from a college program to the big leagues without experience in a professional organization.

Vitello, 47, led Tennessee to a College World Series title in 2024 and is regarded as one of the best coaches in college baseball. He would replace Bob Melvin, who was fired Sept. 29 after an 81-81 season, the Giants' fourth consecutive season without a playoff berth.

That's very surprising. Although with NIL now head coaches are becoming GM and managers at the same time at the college level, on top of the recruiting they were already doing.
