Re: MLB 2019 and Beyond: Something Something Three True Outcomes....

Any time he's on Colbert it's a gold mine, and he should have hosted SNL about 20 times already.

With no sports MLB Network is airing their greatest games. Made me think of what my criteria order would be to rank them.

1. WS Game 7
2. WS Extra innings
3. World Series
4. Series clinching game
5. Playoffs
6. Come back win
7. Walk off
8. Playoff birth
9. Unique circumstances
10. Everything else

Good list. Assuming unique circumstances would include perfect game, no hitter, cycle, etc? I'd have those listed pretty high up, possibly top 3.

1991 World Series Game 7:
1. Check
2. Check
3. Check
4. Check
5. Check
6. No...although I have to imagine the likelihood of winning chart for this game is off the charts with all the opportunities the teams had throughout the game.
7. Check
8. No.
9. Check - Two future hall of famers pitching lights out (Morris, obviously for all 10 innings, and Smoltz, for 7 1/3).
10. Check. Great defense. Deception. A 3-2-3 double play. The greatest postseason pitching performance in history. Only 1 run scored, but 17 base hits. Respect between the teams (Smith shaking Harper's hand before the first pitch). Yep, this game had everything else.

Obviously, I'm a bit biased, but the 1991 World Series was the best ever, and Game 7 of the series is the greatest baseball game ever played.

1991 Game 6 would like to have a word with you. :)

btw - we watched Game 6 from International Market Square for a Halloween Party. The place was packed and while they had video for the game on the main screen instead of dance floor graphics, the sound was off. They changed that in the 9th through the end. When Kirby went yard I must have hugged and kissed 20 people, most of them strangers, possibly half of them men. :p

Game 6 was special for certain (indeed, there were a handful of games that were special in that WS...hence why it was the best ever). Given that Kirby Puckett was my hero, it has an extra special place in my heart. That being said, when I go back through that World Series, I will fast forward through chunks of Game 6. I watch Game 7 in its entirety. :)

ETA: Whenever I hear Jack Buck's "And we'll see you tomorrow night" I still get chills.

I have to be the only Mariners fan who never liked Niehaus. He made it feel like we were watching A ball in Iowa. The down home stuff was really cloying.

I'll have to watch the series. I really loved the Mariners (and Seahawks) in their first 3 seasons, and I think when I was 14 I may have been the most knowledgeable Mariners fan east of the Hudson. Or the Mississippi. Or the Snake.

In 1977 my dad took me to my first Mariners game at Yankee Stadium and we got lost in the South Bronx. That was an adventure.

Apparently Bob Stinson hit the homerun. In my 43-year ancient memories, it was Ruppert Jones, who I idolized.

You’ve established plenty of times on this forum that you have bad taste, I don’t know why you insist on continuing to do so.

I knew you wouldn't care for that. :)

To be fair I know I'm objectively wrong about Niehaus. I just didn't personally like his style. But I consider him to be an all time great announcer. (I never liked Mel Allen either and he's probably the best announcer of all time.)

I have great early memories of listening to over the air radio (opponent) broadcasts of Seattle when they played in Boston and Baltimore. I recall the games starting at 11 but that's probably not right since it would be 8 pm local time, so maybe I was just staying up to 11. The AM signals actually were strong enough to come in except the band in the region area is so packed they were constantly being cut out and in by wavering competing signals from the city and mysterious places like New Haven and Trenton.

Part 2 is up.

The part about Niehaus is spot on. When I lived in Tacoma I lived with my Uncle and I remember my Uncle would turn on the radio whenever the Mariners loaded the bases just in case.

Edgar’s Grand Salami in 95 is just a great call.

Lost it at the bit about Buhner making the entire outfield including Griffey Jr. puke on cue.

Guh. Every play still hurts. We had them. We had them.

I was 10 and that was my first Mets post-season. It set the tone.

Out of curiosity, would you rather have won in '73 and lost in '86 to Boston?

Re: MLB 2019 and Beyond: Something Something Three True Outcomes....

Mookie has watched a couple of those highlight recaps today.

With ESPN and 24/7 sports these are not something needed nowadays. But are quite enjoyable.

Re: MLB 2019 and Beyond: Something Something Three True Outcomes....

In case you’ve missed it, MLB is proposing playing at least the beginning, if not all, of the season in Arizona at spring training sites. Lots of restrictions on travel and who’s allowed at games and all that.

Doesn’t sound like everyone’s on board:
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">One Mets player who asked not to be identified has concerns about the idea of 30 teams playing an entire summer in Arizona: "It's the desert," he said. "Stuff doesn't live there, it dies there."</p>— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) <a href="https://twitter.com/NYPost_Mets/status/1247601539256107009?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 7, 2020</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
