Re: MLB 2014: I paid the $20 mil posting fee for the right to start this thread

I used to think that MLB should be more specific about the criteria, like making pitchers ineligible. And hockey should be more specific about goalies, and football should be more specific about running backs and (especially these days) quarterbacks who are different based on the position they play and the system they play in. But these kinds of discussions have their benefit for the sport involved under the axiom that there’s no such thing as bad controversy. At least the argument is about baseball stuff, not whether the guy juices up or beats his wife and/or children.

The only thing that annoys me is when people fit their theories to benefit players on their teams. Like George King who wouldn’t vote for Pedro Martinez (who had a Kershaw-like year, or maybe more accurately Kershaw had a Pedro-like year) because he was a pitcher, but had previously voted for Yankee pitchers for MVP.

So David Robertson wants "Papelbon money"? And how did the Papelbon contract work out for the Phillies?
Not nearly as badly as the Ryan Howard contract, I don't think. The Phillies' problem isn't really Papelbon, it's that everyone except Hamels and Papelbon is old and terrible. (Except Domonic Brown who's young and terrible.)

Utley is good when not injured, but yeah the Howard contract is awful and I'm sure there are others.

Yeah, Utley has aged pretty well, but he's not still the player he was from 2005-09. "terrible" was probably unnecessarily harsh on him though.

Kershaw faced 749 batters this year. The NL leader in plate appearances this year is Matt Carpenter with 709.

So while he wasn't involved in almost every game like most hitters, he was involved in more individual battles. Not to mention he hit a triple this year, that's amazing for a pitcher!

Conversely a hitter only hits 3-5 times a game and the amount of defense largely depends on their position.

I think it should be harder for pitchers to win it than position players but not impossible. If you look at the allocation of MLB funds it's something like 58% position players, 42% pitching.

Pretty much how I feel. If you have "just" a Cy-worthy season, you shouldn't get the MVP. if you have a truly great season you should be in the running. If you have a legendary season you should win it. I think Kershaw should definitely be in the running.

I was referring more to the closer market than to the Phillies. Handing out big money and (especially) lots of years to closers not named Mariano Rivera usually doesn't work out. Much as I hope they would, the Yankees would be dumb to commit Papelbon numbers to Robertson, especially when they already have a very good reliever who may be a better closer than Robertson. All they lose by letting him go is depth.

Russell Martin signs with the Jays for 82/5.

Jason Heyward and Jordan Walden traded to the Cardinals for Shelby Miller and Tyrell Jenkins. I am a little surprised they let Miller go for what could be one season with Heyward.

With OT gone, we needed an outfielder.

Billy Butler to the A's. 3 for 30.

Stanton's contract with the Marlins is seriously backloaded. Don't know if anybody else has seen this.

It looks outrageous on paper, but he probably won't see most of that $300M.
