Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Baseball across the country is short on umpires... If y'all want, I can put anyone in contact with an organization in their home area.... Go out and learn the rules of the game... You'd be surprised at what you might pick up...

This entire thread is a shining example of how little your average fan knows about the game...

I never get tired of reading this sentiment at all. The refs are either human beings who can make terrible calls and are open to criticism or they are perfect robots. You cannot have it both ways. Sports fans aren't obligated to have the rule book memorized; they are obligated to root for a team.
One of the joys of the internet is that there's always someone around to tell us the rules.

Again, Salty doesn't make that throw, we don't have this conversation. That was all on him. The strike zone last night was amorphous enough to give the players some idea of what a close play would result in.

That's stupid. If I'm on first and there's a base ht to right I shouldn't even bother trying to run to third, I should touch second, find the SS and run into him and be awarded third base. That way I don't risk having a RF with a cannon throw me out at third.

If I'm at bat and hit a ground ball, I should turn around and run into the catcher. Obstruction, I get first base.

I don't know why I never think of these things at the time. I'm kind of like George coming up with my "jerk store" line well after the fact. Anyways, to answer this potential scenario, the runner would be called out for interference, there is a rule for that too you know.

What most folks don't understand is that the Obstruction is NOT an automatic base awarded to the runner. If he had been thrown out by ten feet, he would more than likely been called out. Given that in this play the guy was thrown out by about a step, he more than likely would have been safe if he had not tripped over the fielder, hence, in the umpires judgement, he would have beaten the throw without the obstruction.

IMO, the call was correct and the judgement was correct. Sucks to lose a game like that, but I have no problem with the call.

Correct.

Are you a hand model?

Sorry, this weekend has been dreadful for sports.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

What does the rule book say about running outside the baseline?

The basepath is the line directly between the runner and the base he is running towards. A runner can not deviate more than 3 feet to either side for purposes of evading a tag. Nor can a runner deviate to interfere with a fielder (they can deviate to avoid interference with a fielder, however). Beyond that, they can run pretty much wherever they want.

It's not a rigid line between the bases themselves, except for the last 45 feet between home and first (and even then, it only matters to the extent a thrown ball hits you).

Honestly I don't know why AL managers act like such fools in the postseason. Napoli caught 72 games as recently as last year. Unless he is hurt so bad he is unwilling to catch, he should be catching. The catcher and third baseman are dip***** for letting that ball get down the left field line. The left fielder was pretty late on that ball as well. The Sox could still win this, but not likely given their current abilities.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Uh, no. As a Sox fan, Mike Napoli should not be catching. But, neither should Saltalamacchia. Ross should be catching the rest of the way. On paper, edge to the Sox tonight in the pitching matchup. But who the hell knows with Clay Buchholz. And they've already knocked Wainwright around. They've made some unforced errors, certainly need to clean that up. Win tonight and they can win the series.

Tonight is no doubt important-but not life and death. Regardless of the result-the pressure will sit squarely with StL for the next game. If i were them, i would not want to face going back up to Boston for possibly 2 games-in the cold, in a hostile park, with AL rules for the DH and with a very young pitching staff.

What are the Cards thinking taking the bat out of Beltran's hands? He's a clutch hitter and had a chance to tie, but they do this.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Buck: "It's a TWO run game, they have no reason to hold the runner on, he's not a game tying run."

Runner gets picked off to end the game. Go figure. Good job, buckaroo.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Holy hell, Wong ****ed that up. You don't matter. You're down two. Unless Carlos gets across the plate, you are useless. Stay on the ****ing bag.

I guess in games played by humans, you're going to get brain farts. I believe that Uehara would have closed it out, so the pickoff didn't decide the game, but that's certainly not how I expected it to end.

Very gutsy performance by Buchholtz, who clearly didn't have his best stuff -- broke 90 once? -- and great work by Doubront and Lackey.

Why doesn't he matter? Because they are down by two he's supposed to take a two foot lead? Then a ball gets hit into the hole a SS and SS makes a diving stop and throws him out by two feet at second.
You can't change the way you play the game.
