MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

I kinda figured Mariano would win the MVP after the scoreless inning.

Thought they went a little overboard with the adulation, but don't mind seeing it for him.

This is cool for Mariano Rivera, although I'm surprised it's in the 8th inning.

...
You must have been one of the hordes that either consciously or unconsciously tunes out Buck and McCarver, because they explained it. If the AL had blown the save and the NL gone ahead in the eighth, the NL wouldn't have batted in the ninth inning.

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

That Goldschmidt hit reminded me of the World Series 2 years ago, when Nelson Cruz had a chance to make the final out but it went over his head. This play would've been harder, but still -- Dude, DIVE for it! Sacrifice your body, man! It's for the glory!!!
You sacrifice your body in a game that matters, not in an exhibition.

So, really, he got the save to preserve the save. Or something. Between all the Yankee love and all the Red Sox love I stopped watching. But clearly he was the MVP because his scoreless inning was so much more valuable than all the other guys who pitched a scoreless inning, let alone Sale who pitched two.

I didn't watch at all. The all star game (all of them, every sport) is a complete bore and waste of time. No thank you.

It wasn't a save, it was a hold. Sale got the win, so he didn't get cheated entirely. Mariano's hold was much more valuable than the other holds, or the plays that produced the runs. Does anybody know if the game itself had a wider viewership than the contrived skills competition aka Home Run Derby?

I'm kinda diggin' Matt Harvey after seeing his segment from the Jimmy fallon show.

According to sbnation.com the 2013 ASG was up only 1 percent from 2012: 11 million viewers vs 10.9 million viewers. Apparently it only spiked because of Rivera's 8th inning appearance.

Top markets for the MLB All-Star Game were Detroit, which drew a 20.3 local rating, St. Louis, Kansas City, Cincinnati, Baltimore and host New York. The Big Apple drew an 11.3 rating, an increase of 16 percent from last year's game. The network showed big gains in Cleveland (up 27 percent), Minneapolis (up 26 percent), Boston (up 14 percent) and Tampa Bay (up 13 percent).

All I mean is in Game 6 of the 2011 World Series he had a chance to catch the final out -- would've won the gosh darn World Series! It wasn't an easy catch, but it wasn't a 10 on the difficulty scale either. Not even a 9. But he backed off at the last second because he was going to hit the wall. So last night when it's the ASG and there's a difficult (but not impossible) fly ball to the same guy in the same spot for the winning catch, I was thinking while the ball was still airborn, "Well, we know he won't try to win the game!" Not that I can't let it go or anything. :D

Now there's a good reason for Mariano to be voted the MVP! Had nothing to do with what he did on the field. He increased the number of eyeballs watching the exhibition.

I just realized while having the ASG on tv this afternoon that Tim McCarver hinted he won't be doing next years broadcast. In the bottom of the 5th Joe Buck said he wouldn't want to be sitting to the left of anyone else, and McCarver said "next year you will be."

I guess it could also mean Buck won't be there, but that's way too much to hope for.

McCarver has announced this will be his last year.

Heh. Yeah, in the World Series it was pretty pathetic.

Also: Nice racism, America!

Re: MLB 2013 - This Bud's for you!

Free preview of MLB Extra Innings starts tonight.

Last year, both my mom and I signed up for the discounted second-half package. I think I'm going to skip it this year, as it was a huge time suck. I felt like I had to watch multiple games every night (and there's enough games on anyway, including my own team). A big reason I got it was to listen to Vin Scully - and considering he only does home games, they're all late - can't watch them during the week, so it's not really worth it just for weekends. but then again, Vin isn't going to live forever.... I think... :)

But you can catch the replay on the weekends! ;) :) I don't know how I could survive without MLB.TV.

I think the Pirates open the 2nd half with the Reds. So it'll be a good test to see if they are going to have a collapse for the third year in a row or not.
