MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Infield Fly Rule, my aching ***.

Might as well throw **** on the field. The umpires just did the same thing to the Braves' season.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Armando Galarraga and Jim Joyce think that's a good call.

Showing the replay, and when they called it, makes it even worse. I didn't realize the infield stretched halfway to the warning track.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

good to see those nfl replacement refs are still pulling down a paycheck.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Okay, boys, this is enough. Let's quit throwing stuff on the field now.

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

Cards win the World Series. Book it. Done.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY DO.

Makes a good argument for either only one wild card team in the playoffs-or if you must have 2-then their series should be best 2 out of 3. A one game playoff is just too prone to a single call ending the season. I have no clue whether the call was justified-i just do not know enough about the infield fly rule and how it is applied-but if the series was 2 out of 3 at least this controversy would not end it and you have another chance.

Well perhaps so-maybe it would make up for the 1985 series that was taken away from them with a bad call at first? Probably won't matter though as Washington and then the Reds/Giants lie ahead and to get past that would be even more unlikely than what they did last year.

Infield fly rule includes two things that did not happen on this play: 1) Immediate call when the umpire sees that the infielder is in position to make the catch, and 2) Said infielder must make a normal effort to make above-mentioned catch.

The call was not immediate. By the time the umpire made the call, the ball was about a second from hitting the ground, and the SS was running away from it like it was a bomb about to hit the ground. Secondly, "normal effort" does not mean running 80 feet into the outfield to catch a ball, and that is not an exaggeration of what happened there. That might have been the first 200-foot infield fly rule any of us have ever seen.

It's not the Cards' fault. The left field umpire blew it, plain and simple, with the 3B right on his heels.

I'll have to disagree here.... Didn't see the Infield Fly play live, but did see a bunch of complaining on FB... I found a link on there and watched it.... Immediately I had Infield Fly based upon the ball and the positioning of the infielder... I feel that was the right call... Ordinary effort was there, as the ball landed exactly where the Shortstop was standing before he went forward to make way for the outfielder...

I think the problem is the ump made the call so late...I don't see how you can call infield fly rule when it takes that long to decide.

For those of you that want an infield fly called right away, how about this scenario:

No outs, runners in same position.... Fly ball hit 20 feet closer to the infield, so the shortstop easily camps out under the ball and isn't in an area where the outfielder is covering the same ground... Once camped out under the ball and the ball starting it's downward flight, a gust of wind blows the ball well off course, causing the shortstop to miss the ball... Do you have an out?

Re: MLB 2012, Part 1 - It's here

The infield fly rule is suppose to be called right away so the runners know they are on their own. I honestly believe that was only called because the LF lost perspective, forgetting he's in LF, not at 3B.
