Well, it's because he only really plays on offense. The same reason why some people think Mike Trout should get the AL MVP despite his lesser batting stats; he also plays defense. Cabrera's offensive numbers are right up there (I think I read second only to seasons by Ruth and Gehrig) but that's all he's got.
There is no way in hell Cabrera's name will be mentioned in the same breath as Williams, Gehrig, or Mantle. He might be a HOFer, but not among the all-time greats. (As odd as that last sentence is.)
