Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Of course they are going to insinuate that. It makes perfect PR sense.

yep. it worked.

sort of like MLB "vehemently disagreeing" with the decision works to make some people think he's guilty. :)

I think it's very hard to make an absolute decision either way this soon after the announcement and we'll hear more details in the future.

judging by your responses, I don't think you've read the links here or listened to the audio streams. some very interesting comments from others and Braun himself.

I've read everything about this and listened to people talk about it. Braun's side did a great job putting doubt out there. Didn't prove he's innocent to me, but proved to one person that he might not be guilty.

every arbiter doesn't have to. the one that was mutually agreed upon by the MLBPA and MLB did, and he's the one that makes the decision - as agreed upon by MLBPA and MLB.

Obviously...

In your mind, he's innocent. In mine, he's guilty. Seems we've already made decisions prior to more coming out. We'll see if anything comes out to change that...

New Bobby Valentine Rule: No beer in the clubhouse or on the last leg of charter flights.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

mlb is fairly corrupt. why did they reduce manny's suspension from 100 games to 50, if not for some cheap attempt to get more ticket sales in oakland. either give him no suspension for this second offense if a mistake was made in the testing or make him serve the full term.

In other news, filed under "Least Surprising News of Spring Training", Joel Zumaya wrecked his arm, again.

The AL EAST RULE is in effect starting this season.

A sad day for baseball.
I think it's actually a good thing because it puts emphasis back on winning the division. A 1-game playoff between the 2 wildcards makes it hard for a team like the Yankees or Red Sox to not push for the divisional title and risk going home after 1 game. It prevents the 2nd place team in any division from trying to rest and setup it's rotation for playoffs because the divisional crown is worth so much more than a wildcard now. If they expand the playoffs beyond this, I completely agree but I think this is good.

EDIT: I also like that it ends the "can't play a team from your division in the LDS" rule.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

A one game playoff is pointless. I get it if the teams are tied after 162 games. You need to break that tie. But now we are talking about teams that most of the time will have different records. It's a one game money grab that doesn't improve upon the playoff system in any way.

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

Last year, if I remember correctly, didn't the Cardinals overtake the Braves on the last game of the season to win the wildcard? After making an impressive comeback run in order to do so? So in this new system they would have to play the Braves head to head, after they already beat them fair and square? Sorry, that's not right.

But the Brewers, Phillies and Diamondbacks had already beaten the Cardinals fair and square but all 4 teams started on equal footing for the playoffs. This restores more value to the Divisional Champion by making two wildcard teams play each other in one game, forcing both to use probably their best pitcher, burning him for game 1 vs the their future opponent. Also, there is no such thing as fair and square, Atlanta and St Louis played drastically different schedules so who's to say who really was the better team?

Re: MLB 2011 Post-Season: Who misses the NBA?

The one game aspect of it seems a bit odd, but I tend to agree with Francona that giving more FANS a chance to root for a team that has a shot at the playoffs is a good thing. In my mind, nothing in sports is truly about players or teams, it is all and only about fans.

I like this move mostly because a lot of "traditionalists" are butthurt about it. But they probably want the Giants, Dodgers, and Athletics to move back east. :)

Don't forget the Twins and Rangers. I for one would welcome two Washington Senators franchises playing in the same league.
