MLB 2011 Part 1

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Why exactly does St louis fit?

St. Louis has a huge local fanbase along with a well-established western half of the U.S. fan base as a legacy from when they used to be the farthest west team in MLB. They're kinda the equivalent of Nebraska football - even though the population numbers say they shouldn't be a huge draw, they still bring in the ratings.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

If St. Louis fits, than surely Texa$ should fit too, right?

St Louis is a draw with a lot of history (see previous post) and Texas isn't. They are building some with their recent success but it will take a while before they are a national draw. There;s a reason they get the afternoon game and the Phillies and Yankees are prime time.

Anyone in the AL but the Yanks is a ratings loser for Fox. Detroit is their best bet if the Yankees are out. Arizona and Milwaukee are ratings losers too. A Tampa/Texas vs Milwaukee World Series would be a ratings disaster. From my perspective the Rays vs Brewers would be a great matchup on the field - two small-market teams who aren't supposed to be that great battling for the WS crown would be awesome. Maybe, just maybe, if they can have that kind of postseason success they can resign their free agents (they aren't all greedy ********, Longoria signed a long-term deal with Tampa when he could have waited and cashed in as a free agent).

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Well, hopefully the Yanks lose tonight. With them and Tampa out, I can say it just wasn't meant to be for the Big, Bad AL East.

TBS picked up a couple nice F bombs there.

As some one who literally does not generally care at all about the Tigers one way or the other, I would like to take this opportunity to say, Go Tigers!

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

That ball was not trapped. Umpires gather and finally get it right!

And it took about 30 seconds. If they had used replay it would have taken 5 minutes and totally sucked the life out of the game. For the love of all that's good, please Bud, keep replay out of baseball.

But -- and here's the rub with all this. The runner that was on 1st was on 2nd when the play was made. The throw went to first. How come he was not doubled off? How do the umpires know that he would have made it back to first if the play had been called correctly?

They don't, but they also don't know that he wouldn't have...I think they have to treat it as a dead ball, just like a ground rule double where the guy would clearly score but gets put at third.

Initially, the ump ruled it a trap; it's a fairly legitimate baseball assumption in the rule that he would have went back to first if it was ruled an out, they watch from halfway between 1st and 2nd on close plays like that.

Also, Pujols never even touched first base to attempt to double anyone off, so it's moot.

Just who thought it was a good idea to let Angel Hernandez anywhere near the postseason?
