MLB 2011 Part 1

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Think the Dodgers could win both the NL MVP and Cy Young awards? Not bad for a barely-.500 team with horrible ownership issues. How much weight do you give to contenders vs. non-contenders in the voting process?
Hard to say a guy was "most valuable" when his team loses half his games.

Cy Young is easier for a bad team player to win since his teams record is not considered outside of the games he started.

It's hard to ignore Kemp's numbers, though. He's not going to win the Triple Crown, but he's the only guy in the top 5 in all three categories, and without another great player on his team to drive in or hit behind him (yes, I know other stats may be more important - I'll leave it to someone else to come up with those :p). Is that more important than hitting in the clutch in important games, like Braun or Fielder? Hard to say. I think Braun did a lot to help his cause on Friday, and I think it'll be close between him and Kemp. Fielder will get some votes, but he'll suffer when compared to those two as far as all-around greatness, even though his average is much improved.

Not sure what Kershaw's run support looks like compared to Kennedy or Halladay, but I am guessing it can't be as good.

The Yankees should want the Red Sox in instead of the Rays because they actually have pitching. You won't hear much whining when the Sox choke it away.
So, I take it you're new? ;) ;) ;)

The only good thing about the Boston fan base is it actually makes the New York City fan base look relatively classy. Which is saying something.

Times for the potential game 163s set:

AL: 4:07 Eastern in TB
NL: 7:07 Eastern in STL

What if there's only one? Would it still be 4:07 in Tampa, or would they push it back to primetime?

I would think it would still be early, since they may have to travel before Friday (I assumed that's why the AL has the early slot). The link I saw didn't say it would be different. But I would not put it past MLB to cater to the TV crowd instead of the teams.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

No, I know. There won't be mass whining if they choke, however, I'm talking about the whining when they send out the GCL Yankees and tank the **** game. It's going to be brilliant. :D

Why is it going to be brilliant? Are you expecting anything different?

The times are set in stone. They will not change if there is only one game.

Soooo....if the Sox win the wild card (and there BETTER NOT be any champagne soaked celebration) they would play Texas. Wouldn't Tampa Bay also play Texas when they win it? Or am I missing something?

Depends if Texas or Detroit wins the 2 seed I believe.

NY is slotted to play the 3. Meaning the WC plays the 2.

It still depends, because, like the NL, the #2 seed is still up in the air. The Rangers are 1 game up on the Tigers. The Tigers have the tiebreaker.

Rangers win (or both Rangers and Tigers lose): Rangers host the Wild Card team
Rangers lose, Tigers win: Tigers win the tiebreaker and host the Wild Card team

It doesn't matter which team wins the Wild Card for seeding, since they're in the same division and neither will play the Yankees.

In the NL - the Brewers are 1 game up on Arizona. Arizona has the tiebreaker.

Brewers win (or Brewers and Dbacks both lose), Braves win Wild Card: Brewers host Braves, Phillies host Dbacks
Brewers lose, DBacks win, Braves win Wild Card: Dbacks host Braves, Phillies host Brewers
Brewers win (or Brewers and Dbacks both lose), Cardinals win Wild Card: Brewers host Dbacks, Phillies host Cards
Brewers lose, DBacks win, Cards win Wild Card: Dbacks host Brewers, Phillies host Cards

phew!

I hope there isn't a test on this later.

That made my head hurt. :)

So, the Red Sox are looking to potentially make a quickie trade to get a pitcher in for the play-in game should it actually happen. Yeah, I don't know what to make of that. I suppose it shouldn't matter as the chance of their being a playoff game is small. And if there is one, using a pitcher who hasn't been with the team for 24 hours?

It's either Lackey or a mercenary they pick up for one game. Or option C. Just let Lavarnway pitch.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

From SI's twitter
Mets manager Terry Collins just told media that Reyes did ask out of the game if he got a hit in first at-bat.

Reminds me of how Ted Williams begged out of his game so he could get the .400 mark in 1941. Oh no, wait, he played a double header and went 6 for 8...

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

If I was Girardi, I'd send out the GCL Yankees and giggle like a school girl the whole time while rolling around in the dugout. Then I'd sit back and pop some popcorn for the epic whinefest that would ensue. It would probably be the most entertaining week in sports history.

No, I know. There won't be mass whining if they choke, however, I'm talking about the whining when they send out the GCL Yankees and tank the **** game. It's going to be brilliant. :D

Sox fans aren't going to whine about that. The Yankees have earned the right to do that and the Sox have nobody else to blame.

So, I take it you're new? ;) ;) ;)

Yawn. Boston fans are no better/worse than New York.

All depends on what happens tonight...

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Making this comparison sounds a lot like you are saying Reyes is as good as Williams.

How do you figure that? I'm comparing the two and Reyes come up lacking, especially in the intestinal fortitude category. Reyes can win the batting title by getting a hit and then sitting the rest of the game out. Ted Williams was given permission by his manager to sit out both games of a double header with his average at .3996 which would round to .400 Instead of taking the cowardly way out, he actually played and raised his average six points. No way Ted Williams asks his manager to take him out of the game to win a batting title. He'd probably stand on the base in protest if the manager tried to take him out. I don't generally care about such things, but I hope Brawn gets three hits and Reyes wears the golden sombrero tonight.
