MLB 2011 Part 1

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

And then tomorrow we have games in Cleveland, Chicago and Toronto. Yes, I know Rogers Centre has a retractable roof, but still. Would it really be that difficult to have the Philadelphia-Houston series in Houston?

YOU would need to have Toronto host if you wanted to stay warm weather/dome for the first couple weeks and then there woulld still be 1 cold weather series in the American league..
AL hosts- Angels, Mariners, Rangers, Blue Jays, Rays, A's (which may still be cold)+1
NL Hosts - Braves, Marlins, Astros, Brewers, DBacks, Dodgers, Padres, SF (see A's)

Yes, but there are four series between warm air destinations and freezing cold destinations this weekend that are being played in the cold city. Arizona @ Colorado? Really? They don't play enough that they could schedule that series for Phoenix instead of Denver? At least the Red Sox are starting the season in Texas.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

I love those snowy April days, though. And occasionally you get a tundra wind ripping through Wrigley so even if there's no precipitation it's about 18 degrees. Nothing like watching guys in three layers try to hit (or throw) a curve ball.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

MLB Extra Innings free trial runs through 4/10. On DirecTV that is channels 720-749.

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Happy Opening day!!! Why is it for the first 2 weeks of the season the home teams aren't warm weather cities and domes? Arizona AT Colorado? Atlanta AT Washington? San Diego AT St Louis...really?

Because the collective bargaining agreement doesn't allow 2-week long road trips anymore. Best you could do is keep teams on the road for 10 days or so.

Plus MLB wants every team's opening day to be within a week of the real opening day.

My question is why are they opening the season on a Thursday instead of the traditional Monday? (excluding ESPN's sunday night game)

Re: MLB 2011 Part 1

Well MLB just ruined my summer...apparently Virginia, MN (where I'm going to be stuck all summer for work) is blacked out for Brewers games on mlb.tv and mlb 11 at bat. What a ****ing joke.

Did you ask why? Proximity to Milwaukee?

With the cold weather cities thing, how long exactly do you make them stay away from home?

Ideally, they would start a week later, have Saturday and/or Sunday doubleheaders and therefore wouldn't have to schedule cold-weather games until around mid-April or after mid-October. The MLB season should not run from March to November.

do a google image search for MLB tv blackouts...and be thankful you don't live in Iowa like I do.

Some of those are insane. If you live in western Iowa you shouldn't be considered "local" for Chicago and Milwaukee. I'm surprised they don't try to black out the Rockies, too.

This one is older but a little easier to follow. The whole thing is ridiculous. If you can't get the games on cable where you are, you shouldn't be blacked out...its as simple as that.

I've said this elsewhere, but living in Counciltucky was the prime example of the failure of this system. Counciltucky is, for all intents and purposes, a suburb of Omaha. Same cable company and phone company and everything. I lived right on the river (or as close as one could be). I was blacked out of Cubs games, even though Comcast Sports Chicago was not available from the local cable company and WGN only shows 1 out of 5 games anymore. Had I lived a quarter mile to the West in Downtown Omaha, I could've paid for extra innings and/or MLB tv and gotten every single Cubs game.

So instead of paying MLB $150/year or whatever, I pay em zilch. My hope is that they'll eventually stream everything over the net and just compensate the local broadcasters, but I'm not holding my breath waiting.

I run into the same thing with hockey, too, though it's not nearly as bad. I'll have 3 teams blacked out (MIN, STL, CHI), but I'll still probably get the NHL center ice package (or its on-line streaming equivalent).

I don't understand how FSWi has rights to broadcasts in St louis county, minnesota...it would be one thing if like you said, I could actually get FSWi on my local cable...even if it was in the sports pack...its not an option so why black me out?

Because the blackout areas are carryovers from an era before cable television, let alone satellite packages. And they show no sign of fixing it anytime soon, and probably won't so long as fans are willing to keep paying out the wazoo for sports tiers and even basic ESPN.
