MLB 2010: The Second Half

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

Werth gets a 7-year deal from the Nationals.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

From what I'm reading, Gonzales wanted an 8 year extension. That wasn't going to happen.

Why not? He's on par with Tex and he's two years younger so the deals were signed around the same ages. Boston can afford the contract, and apparently held firm on 6 years. Why not offer 7 and the team option for the 8th year that can be attained easily?

Why would he settle for less? And why did the Red Sox waste everyone's time thinking Gonzalez would accept 6 years after years of being underpaid?

I don't know. The Boston beat writers have been uncharacteristically quiet today. All news is coming from national sources (mainly Ken Rosenthal and Peter Gammons). Opposing GM's are saying the deal isn't dead, but Gammons says A-Gon left Boston @ 4:30...

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

And now word is it's a done deal: Adrian Gonzales to the Red Sox.

This is going to make for a fascinating column.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

Would have been nice to land Gonzales and Werth, but that deal from the Nationals is just over-the-top. 7 years at close to $20mil per?!?

How about a nice bullpen revamp instead?

certainly AG is a landmark get.. but i don't see the sox offense as monumentally better +agon -beltre & vmart. I thought werth was the key bat; crawford would be a nice get, but he is a lefty with no real power - neither of which the sox are looking for.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

I watched the entire Ken Burns Baseball collection the past few days (not the "tenth inning" that just came out, though). Highly recommend it if you have a good 25 hours to spare. :) Every era was interesting and well done. Except maybe the 20s, because the entire 2 hours was about Babe Ruth (just a personal preference). I did get really sick of Daniel Okrent through the whole series.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

Yanks reportedly offered Cliff Lee 6/150.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

Carlos Pena to the Cubs and Konerko back to the White Sox

This is handy: sortable Free Agent Tracker. Can sort by moves already made or available free agents.

Reportedly, Crawford to Boston, 7 years, $142M.

But yeah, keep telling yourselves you're somehow different from the Yankees.

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

Don't be cranky that the more money the Mets spend, the worse they get ;)

But yeah, no Sox fans should get on the Yankees for spending anymore

$40-something million in annual salary comes off the Red Sox payroll going into next season. The Red Sox sign Gonzales and Crawford. The per-year cost is probably not much more than inflation.

People were okay with the Red Sox pi**ing $40m down their leg. It's just when it's spent well that it's a problem. :)

Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half

While the rest of us just hate both teams with a passion.

Hating the Yankees or the Red Sox is like hating winter. It's structurally guaranteed to come -- there's no point getting bent about it.

Then again, rooting for them is like rooting for compound interest. Yeah, money makes money -- whoopee.
