Re: MLB 2010: The Second Half
And from what I've been told by a person who has been a consultant in talks of a new stadium, there's an internal struggle in the greater Tampa area over where a new facility would be built. The lease that the Rays have for the Times-Forum will only be allowed to be broken (without penalty) if the new stadium is built in St. Pete, whereas Tampa wants a new facility to be built in a former industrial area with little to no supporting attractions (restaurants, shops, etc.). Then there's the greater Orlando area not far off where Disney would more than likely welcome a ballpark being built in the area if it was allowed some more fan/tourist manipulation.
The stadium is in just about the worst place possible, for the majority of the people they would take over an hour to get to the stadium, worse during traffic...which as you can tell is when people could be heading to the game.
And Florida on a whole is a terrible place for pro sports. Of all the pro teams in Florida and there are several...Magic, Heat, Bucs, Panthers, Lightning, Rays, Marlins...the only one truly supported is the Dolphins.
And the Marlins were never supported, it had nothing to do with ownership. The state simply supports baseball terribly. Their terrible pro sports fans. There and Georgia are the two most pathetic pro sports states.
