AJ Hinch fired as D-Backs manager. Kirk Gibson named manager.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Mets win on a pickoff tonight. KRod gets the save for facing two men and giving up two hits. Nice.

Jerry had to bring him in because it was a save situation. But he had to go with Dessens before that because it was not a save situation. And he had to go with Feliciano before that because it is a rule that righty relievers are not allowed to pitch to lefties, and he had to take him out because lefty relievers are not allowed to pitch to righties.

Speaking of the Mets, I have to share this sentence from an MLBTR article today:

In the spring of 2000, the Mets agreed to an annual payment of approximately $1.2 million a year from 2011 to 2035 to buy out Bonilla's 2000 contract worth $5.9 million.

Hmm... we could pay $5.9M now, orrrrrrr $15M or so later....

We were just talking about that in the NHL thread, because I was amazed that Alexei Yashin was still getting paid. GLM had the stat, that something like $20MM was being paid next year to Yashin, DiPietro, and some other guy.

It's actually more like nearly $30 million.

Kind of glad Strassberg did not make the All Star team. He is good, but he still needs work and ther are plenty of other deserving pitchers.

Ditto.

In other news: I understand it's not the Cubs' year, but are they even trying anymore?

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

I'm excited to see Omar Infante on the All-Star team!!!!!

Cripes, what a stupid event all All-Star games are. I wouldn't pay a nickel to see one, and that is coming from someone who is willingly paying to see the Astros host the Pirates next month.

I was surprised by the selection as well... then I burst out laughing because the Cubs traded to get him off the Tigers and then traded him for almost nothing to the Braves.

I love Jim Hendry.

All-Star selections are a joke.

Here's a stat line for ya: 19 HR, .412 OBP, .984 OPS - didn't make the NL roster.

Here's another: 1 HR, .341 OBP, .717 OPS, 156 at-bats - manager selection to the NL team.

Maybe this will be rectified with the 34th man vote, but honestly, it shouldn't come to that.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

It's Votto's fault for playing First Base which is stacked in both leagues.

How bout leaving Ryan Howard at home and taking Votto instead. That was the real injustice!

If you can make a plausible argument for leaving a guy off a team that leads the league in OPS, I'd love to hear it.

Plus with the game being in Anaheim, that means AL rules and thus a DH. Nah, the NL can't possibly find a use for a guy leading their league in one of the most important batting categories and who gets on base the 2nd most often without making an out. :p

Correction: 3rd most often. Willingham and Pujols are tied with a .413 OBP. Votto is at .412. Nobody else in the NL is above .391.

First, I should say I agree Votto should be on the team.

The argument is that you can't play him in the field late in the game anywhere but 1st. Infante can play several infield spots. He is more valuable late in a game.

So if you are trying to win an all-star game because it apparently means something you need a versatile player. The best hitters only get hits 3-in-10 times, but defense is all the time.

More valuable defensively. Far less valuable offensively.

Or you could just play the best player at each position the entire game with potential substitutions involving the 2nd best player at each position. :p

A light-hitting utility player with few at-bats making the AS team is a joke, plain and simple. Then again, having an exhibition game "mean something" is also a joke, but I digress.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

I said I agreed with you. :p

Torii has 7 RBI tonight. He must love hitting against the Royals.

He is also now 6 for 6 with the bases loaded this year.
