Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

It might end up meaning nothing. But integrity is the only way sports can exist.

Without it, their is no need for rules of any kind.

Look, I don't disagree. I just don't get why TBA is getting all worked up over it.

Trey Hillman fired

I have no idea what they think they're going to accomplish there. It's hard to fight a forest fire when all they give you is a squirt gun.

He was also a terrible manager. It's not much, but he wasn't improving the team's chances to improve itself. He wasn't given anything at all to work with but he made the team worse.

they have a pretty poor draft record. i think there will be alot of pressure on small market teams as the rays create an example of how to win on a small payroll.

but in a lot of ways, the rays ability to have so many 'hits' in the draft was because of the many 'misses' of all the teams around them.

Its hard to miss when you draft first.

In the first round, maybe. But you can make a lot of hay in the 2nd-10th rounds if you draft properly.

And they weren't thrifty when they took Alex Gordon or Luke Hochevar, either.

Twins as well :)

Although now we have a larger payroll. Which pays off the players we drafted and developed ourselves.

Re: MLB 2010: Hope Springs Eternal

Exactly. The Twins as well.

You can sign multiple 1st round draft picks for the cost of one free agent. And if your scouting department is competent, within 5-7 years your team will improve dramatically, and for a whole lot less than you would think. If you're not going to spend on the farm system, and you're not going to spend on free agents, you're dead-dog ****ed. You'll be looking up in the standings at the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Look at a good chunk of the Tigers:

Verlander: Draft pick
Porcello: Draft pick
Bonderman: acquired for Jeff Weaver, another Tiger draft pick
Cabrera and Willis: Acquired for Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, and other assorted pitchers, all Tiger draft picks
Avila: Draft pick
Sizemore: Draft pick
Inge: Draft pick
Guillen: Acquired for Ramon Santiago, signed and developed within Tiger farm system
Santiago: Originally signed and developed in Detroit, traded to Seattle for Guillen, reacquired in a minor trade
Jackson: Acquired in the trade that involved Curtis Granderson and Edwin Jackson. The Tigers drafted Granderson and acquired Jackson for a left-handed outfielder that the Tigers drafted (Matt Joyce).
Zumaya: Draft pick
Coke: See Austin Jackson trade
Scherzer: See Zumaya and Jackson

There are more on the roster that are either home-grown, or acquired using home-grown talent. This is just off the top of my head without any effort to look at the others. And there's also more on the way, that we will begin to see in 2011 and 2012.

Keep in mind that this franchise was god-awful hideous in 2002 and 2003, and the farm system was absolutely barren, Curtis Granderson exempted. Yes, the signings of Pudge Rodriguez, Magglio Ordonez and Kenny Rogers started the ball rolling and helped immensely to start with, but both Rogers and Pudge were gone by the end of 2008, and have had no effect on the Tigers' farm systems. Sure, there are free agent signings, but every club will have those.

Thank you Johan and Josh.

14 IP, 12 K, 0.64 ERA, 0.71 WHIP. That should help my stats a little. :D

Its funny, I gave up Johan to you, and my starting pitching hasn't suffered at all.
Phil Hughes and Liriano have helped me out a bit. :)

My pitching improved, but I thought someone would want pitching for a more "reliable" 1B (Prado is good, but I thought he was too risky in the long run).

He's an extra guy on my team, usually I play him as the utility player, and have Morneau at 1st.

I also have a pending trade that I've been waiting for, for about 2 weeks. I really wish it would get accepted, I need another outfielder.
