Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Comparisons to Halloween '91? They're not pulling any punches with this one. Which means we'll probably get 3 inches.
This ain't no MNS storm.

The combination of available moisture, high snow-to-liquid ratio (15 to 20-1), and storm track (through IA and into southern WI) all point to widespread heavy snow. The drive home from work tomorrow is going to be real ****ty.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

I just got home a few minutes ago from the Gopher game, and had to make a few pit stops along the way. I stop off at Walmart first to get my mom a couple things. The snow is coming down, but not too bad. I then stop by the nursing home so I can deliver those items. I'm in there for a couple minutes - four tops - and by the time I get back to my car, it has a good coating all around. I then stop by Cub to get some provisions for the weekend, fully intended to either stay home all weekend should the we get what's really bad. I'm in there about 45 minutes, and there's about an inch of snow on my car, drifts on the windshield ranging from 2-3 inches. Yup, it's here.

And the snow storm didn't hit Mpls until about 10:15. It appears to have hit Apple Valley much earlier than that, based upon the amount of snow already on the streets when I entered the city. And the snow was coming down from the east, I guess that's why there's so much moisture in the air. It's one of those counter-clockwise systems, I'm guessing, and we're on the northern side of it.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Yes, the snow hit the southern cities first. Moisture is being pulled northward on the east side of the storm which is approaching from western Iowa. Since the track is taking it south of us, the winds will be out of the E (or NE) until the low passes into WI/IL - that's when we'll see a shift to the N and an increase in speed / plunging temperatures.

Paul Douglas is now calling for 1-2 feet in the metro. The forecast models from yesterday are clustering on 14-16", although the one outlier is predicting an incredibly high 27" total (which would bring us almost up to the '91 Halloween blizzard). While most storms only seem to have a major impact outside the metro, this one could really foul things up even inside the metro.

St. Paul's Midway reporting in with approximately a foot of snow.

The wind has really picked up, Weatherbug reporting 23MPH out of the NNE.

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

Everyone was projecting 3-7 inches for the Alexandria area and we maybe got 4 flakes....... I was all ready to break out the snow blower and do some snow maintenance......

You got four flakes? The only flake I saw today in Alex was myself in the mirror. Wait, what? :D

Re: Minnesotans arguing about the weather...

The southern / eastern metro definitely took the brunt of this storm - 15-22" appears to be the range. I'd estimate 18" fell here in Eagan with drifts 2-3x higher than that.

As you go northwest of the cities, the amounts drop off quite dramatically. I think St, Clooud only received about 7".

The last time I looked out my door the drifts were well over waist high on me.

Funny thing about these large drifts, and it always happens this way to one degree or another, is that there are now bare spots of grass when I look out my rear windows. I think it all ended up in the walkway to my front door. Sucks to be the snow removal crew, and later me when I have to clean up after their halfassed efforts.
