Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Really bad looking scene with Sarah Potomak.

Dan Hamann was wondering why Lauren Miller didn't get a game misconduct. So was I.

Man, I hope she is OK. I don't expect we will hear anything until next Saturday afternoon and we see the line sheet or hear Brad Frost's pregame interview and he says whether she is in the line up or not.

Cast a terrible pall over the third period of the game today.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

I am convinced Hanrahan and Hedlund will not be happy until someone is very badly hurt. They blew a checking from behind call yesterday that knocked Woken out of the game and scratched today. The attack on Potomac was retaliation from a player who could not keep up with her so cross checking her into the boards 'solved' that problem. The refs had let several thing go before that and made a couple of really stupid calls (including watching one penalty happen & waiting for the retaliation fore calling the retaliation & not the instigating penalty). The had no control over the game

That one's pretty easy: a boarding major does not carry an automatic game misconduct with it the way that checking from behind does. I'm not even sure that the ref can add one; I believe they would need to deem that the player of guilty of intent to injure, which carries a game DQ rather than a misconduct. While I thought that the hit was definitely a dirty play, it wasn't from behind and doesn't really meet the standard for what constitutes "intent to injure." So, it was probably the right call. The problem is that Hanrahan and Hedlund let the series get completely out of control by not calling the obvious checking from behind yesterday and letting a number of dangerous plays prior to the hit on Potomak go today.

The officiating this weekend was absolutely inexcusable, even by the standards of the WCHA. I'm pretty sure it's gotten worse the past few years and I have no idea what Greg Shepard is doing.

By that standard, I have a bad feeling that they might be happy this evening.

I'm pretty sure it was Wolfe who was checked from behind. Woken got hurt on a different dangerous play.

Okay, I was half right. From the NCAA Ice Hockey Rulebook, page 48:

Rule 42 - Boarding
42.1 Boarding - A player shall not body check, cross-check, elbow, charge or trip an opponent from the front or side in such a manner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently into the boards (see Rule 50).
PENALTY—Minor or major at the discretion of the referee, based on degree of violence of the impact with the boards. A game misconduct or disqualification may be assessed at the discretion of the referee.

Having watched the replay, it definitely should have gotten a misconduct; it was worse than I initially thought. Watching live, I thought Potomak had gotten around Lauren Miller to the outside and Miller cross-checked her to avoid being beaten. That is incorrect; Potomak fell down trying to get around Miller, and Miller cross-checked her while she was on her knees and already sliding towards the boards. It wasn't even an instantaneous thing; Miller had plenty of time to think about what she was doing, and even kind of double clutched. An ugly, ugly play.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Actually, we were both wrong. It was Camarenesi. I'm watching the video, trying to find the play where Woken got hurt.

Woken got hurt on BSU's first penalty:
1st...Jacqueline Kaasa....CHECKING.... 02:19
It's 2:58 into the game stream. After Woken got up from getting hit into the boards she skated away, but she skated to the bench, not back into the play.

Any highlight video clips from this past weekend? In particular, Pannek's stickhandling magic on her first goal on Sunday? Come to think of it, the one-timer passing clinic they put on, which cumulated in her second goal, was also a thing of beauty also.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

what do you suppose the odds are that one of the jock sniffer bars in town will have the game on Sunday?

what's really sad is when the only thing on the tv is a couple of talking heads talking about sports, even worse than a hoops game between two nobodies

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

ARD supposedly back for WisconSIN and Minnesota's first line won't be intact without Potomak. The pieces are in place such that it will be embarrassing for Wisconsin if they don't sweep.

LOL. Don't have any confidence in the rest of the team, eh? That's ok, don't get me wrong. Potomak will play.

I'm just trying to give you some hope.

I assumed you were just bitter since you discovered 'animal husbandry' didn't mean what you thought.

Someone else wrote me that he saw SP while delivering stuff to the U today & she looked good and healthy. More than just for the game I hope everyone stays healthy; as much as I love the game it is not worth wrecking your body or your brain for.

Look at the stats for the rest of the team past the first line. It's like a drop off a cliff. Not a lot a confidence to found there. Minnesota will be lucky to be keep it to a 3 or 4 goal margin.

Not sure if you're sandbagging here FiveHole but I would respectfully disagree. Any number of teams have held the Badgers to margins of 3 or less, including the likes of St. Cloud, Ohio State and Mankato. Not to mention UMD splitting 4-1 games with them two weekends ago. Yes the Badgers should be favored, especially at home, but I give the Gophers a decent chance to win and a very good chance to keep the margin at no more than two. Two caveats: Their first line of Pannek, Cameranesi and Potomak is healthy and ready to go, and Peters makes the saves she's fully capable of making.
