Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

I think it was probably interesting for folks with other rooting interests to have seen UMD and Minnesota on a free stream. Hard to explain unless you see it yourself how well Minnesota can control the puck and get themselves into position for scoring chances...Only to not convert on them. Some of that is goaltending but some of the blame is on them for just not converting. It's been an issue all season long and could be the reason that UMD hangs with them and defeats them.
That and maybe UM is no deeper than UMD, at least as far as scoring ability is concerned.

The odd thing to me is that, on the offensive end they are doing what they need to more often then not. EVery team has stretches where they don't get bounces, have rebounds go the "wrong way" and just miss tip-ins. But the whole season has been like that for MN. It is hard to see them doing things wrong, or different from past years (mostly, not always) on the O but they just are not getting the payoffs.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

There's no way anyone should be counting out UM. I see UM in the F4. I just don't think UMD is deep enough hang on even with Rooney. If Cornell upsets Clarkson, UM is in the final. UW played Cornell twice and dominated the games, there's no reason why UM would not do the same. Clarkson will be a tough out, UW played them also and the games were pretty wide open and more even than the Cornell games, though that was early in the season.
By wearing green, Clarkson instantly becomes the team in the tournament most likely to beat Minnesota. It's all a matter of wavelength. :(

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

All the frustration they experienced yesterday should give them some extra determination to improve their on their 1.6% shooting percentage if the two teams play a rematch in the NCAA quarterfinal. And speaking of shooting percentages, in the last 6 games it's a dismal 3.8% (9 goals on 238 shots). No matter how far they advance in the tournament, it's something for all returning team members to work on during the off-season.

I've been dismayed for a long time this season by the low percentage of shots we are scoring on and the high percentage of shots our opponents have been scoring on. For the season our shooting percentage is .087 and so is our opponents'.
This is a stat that has created all sorts of problems for us SO FAR this year.

Here are this year's teams in order of current pairwise:
Team...shooting % for.......% against.............differential
UM............0.087.................0.087..................0
UW....... 0.098................0.045...............0.053
Clarkson...0.107................0.069.............. 0.038
UMD....... 0.094................0.058...............0.036
BC....... 0.092................0.068...............0.024
SLU....... 0.108................0.072...............0.036
Cornell.......0.091...............0.064...............0.027
Robert Morris.0.1................0.073...............0.027
Princeton.....0.086...............0.065...............0.021
Northeastern..0.096............0.083...............0.013
Quinnipiac....0.078................0.068...............0.01
BU...............0.106................0.085...............0.021
Colgate.......0.085................0.082...............0.003
UND...........0.078................0.082...............-0.004
Vermont.......0.087................0.079...............0.008
Team...shooting % for.......% against.............differential

Here is the UM program history by season since the NCAA era began from worst to best. Normally we score at a much higher percentage than our opponents, look at the bottom of the chart and see the differential the last few seasons compared to no differential this season.

they scored 50% more goals in previous years
kind of amazing they still are in the mix with that kind of fall off

I’m sure that you know 120 is two thirds of 180, and I’m confident your intent was to point out that scoring is down by a third from previous years, with more games to go. Just clarifying your post for those who might confuse divisors and dividends.

If your intent was to spur discussion, you might have been better served to point out the change in goals per game, or possibly point out the change in how many shots the Gophers take per goal, or even dazzled everyone by pointing out that this year’s Gophers are on track to limit opponents’ shots to a historically low number for the program.

Well, maybe not that last one. It could be construed to support a contention that defense wins championships.

I thought he was making reference to my handy dandy statistical chart a few posts previous showing our shot percentage relative to previous years, and our opponents shot percentage relative to previous years.

(But that's probably just because I consider myself the center of the universe ;) )

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

50% of 120 is 60, subtract that from 180, what do you get?

ergo, they scored 50% more goals in previous years than this year

it is also true that there goal production is down 33% from previous years
I realize some here are math challenged and probably have a hard time comprehending that

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Just got home from the men's game. Congratulations to them for with their 4-0 win over MSU they set an NCAA record 6th straight conference championship breaking the record of 5 they had held with BU.

I believe she is 5'9". She looked a bit above average on the ice IIRC

That's good. Same height as Bozek and maybe she'll grow a couple more inches or so in high school which reminds me of a basketball story.

My oldest brother was a high school teacher for 40 years or so in southern Minnesota and also was one of its boys' basketball coaches. His high school girls' team was in the state tournament one year and I went to one of the games with him. I asked him if his high school had any future star basketball players and he said not really but there is this 7th grader over in Lake City that's 6' 8'' and they can't stop him under the basket. He said they think he will be over 7 feet by the time he's in high school. I asked him the kids name and he said, "Randy Breuer." Never heard of him. "You will," he said.

Still hoping for a few close to 6 foot players on defense to replace the ones we've lost and will lose when Lee graduates.

Wait a cotton picking minute...Noboby told me there was going to be a math quiz?

BGOTY Today!

I'm really excited for the game today and for our players. Two time defending national champions....they have a lot on the line. They think they can do it! I hope they do. 3 straight losses to UMD has to have gotten their attention. I think we can beat them if our goaltending is solid. If we don't come out on top this afternoon, I may follow ARM's lead and just admit the Bulldogs were the better team.

Sandelin said his overtime goal owed to instruction from his father, Minnesota-Duluth head coach Scott Sandelin.
“All the times he’s told me to shoot the puck right away, I just shot it and it happened to go in,” Sandelin said.
