Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

The last time Grace Zumwinkle played with the USA U18's I thought she really stood out, so I'm expecting more of the same (and maybe then some) when they play in the 2017 IIHF Tourney which starts on January 7th. All of the Gopher recruits on the USA team look to be very very good, but from the limited amount I've seen GZ appears to be something special. Just on her stats alone - against a very challenging schedule (http://www.bgoski.com/KRACH_SOS_20161223.htm) - I'll be very surprised if she doesn't win Minnesota's Ms. Hockey this season.

Watching Breck v. Edina right now. Edina is the fastest girls team I have ever seen by a large margin. GZ still stands out. Has 2 goals and 2 pipes in 2 periods while Breck is outshot about25-12 (scorekeeper here as a bit of a bias)

Don't even bother, MJ is all over the situation.
He's even older than I am; by the time an 8th grader starts college, we'll both be living in old-folks homes.

We may see a little of Emma May vs the Whitecaps I think.

Maybe a period each of all three netminders? Would like to see more of Serena D'Angelo also.

Jeez, Kendall Coyne is good.

I thought this one went pretty much the way the September exhibition went. The Whitecaps have enormous talent. But it is apparent immediately that they don't practice together very much. And they probably practice at high intensity pretty much never. They certainly do not practice at high intensity nearly often enough to be in shape to play 60 minutes against a top flight D-1 team that has high intensity practice for a couple of hours every day of the week.

The Whitecaps were the better team early on despite being behind on the scoreboard. They have enormous talent.

As the game went on talent started to fall behind conditioning.

The Gophers were the better team at the end.

There were some entertaining bits but mostly it was a good scrimmage.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

they must have read your post between the 1st and 2nd period vs UMD
they were outshot in the 1st but come alive in 2nd

it might be conditioning, but I'm thinking it is also simply lack of playing together with same roster

yeah, onCoyne , but kudos to Gophers for keeping her from scoring more than she did
interesting lineup for Gophers

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Kelly Pannek, her hands and vision are really a treat to watch this season. She knows what to do with the puck when she gets it, and she really knows how to keep the puck on her stick. She's averaging 1.57 assists per game, which is comfortably tops in the country. And a lot of those assists are primary and extremely creative.

Also, by the way, Kelly has more blocked shots (27) than any forward in the country except Jordan McLaughlin of MN-State-Mankato.

I'm a huge Washington Capitals fan, and Pannek's play reminds me so much of Nicklas Backstrom.

Now that is really impressive & says a lot about her work ethic.

When you have goaltending that bad, everyone needs to be a shot blocker, eh? ;)

It's hard to block shots for the Gophers. They don't allow many shot attempts, and a high percentage of those are breakaways. :(

Eh indeed...At the risk of cherry picking stats. The last four games that count Peters has a save percentage of .787. and a 4.00 GAA.

Don't forget to set your DVR's to record Gophers vs Bulldogs at 3PM Central tomorrow (Friday) on FSN :D

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Cameranesi is on the line sheet......hip, hip, hooray!!

Taylor Williamson is centering Schammel and Schipper......the Sch--line.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

After two periods-one shot on goal for our second or third line forwards. Caitlyn Reilly has a SOG.

Otherwise, it's Baldwin, Wolfe, Marshall, and our first liners. It would be nice to see some of these other forwards show the ability to penetrate a little bit, or make a good pass.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Something is deeply wrong with this team. Only one of their last fifteen periods (the first of the first game in Boston) has been really solid. They weren't bad in the third tonight, but were totally outhustled for the first two. That's a two part equation, because UMD played really well, the Gophers were flat and sloppy. I was hoping that having Cameranesi back would make a difference, but it was muted at best. The first line had shots, but not much in the way of scoring chances beyond a glorious play shorthanded that didn't go in.

The rot goes all the way through, as even Lee Stecklein hasn't impressed lately.
