Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Just one thought for Sidney Peters and I'll quote Aaron Rogers for it...RELAX. ;)
Quoting Rodgers is never a good idea, particularly in a Gophers thread.

I'm confident that a lot of the flaws in this team are temporary, though "temporary" may well mean the rest of this season.
Coming into this season, I think we were aware that our roster didn't match up well with UW's, and to win any banners, we'd have to steal them. The disappointment has been the number of other teams that we can appear to be beneath for long stretches.

You have good reason to be...The addition by subtraction that occurs after this year will infuse a whole lot of talent into an already pretty darn good lineup.
When I think back over this season about which players are capable of making a play to swing a game on a somewhat regular basis, I'd list in some order: Pannek, Potomak, Cameranesi, Schipper, Stecklein, and Wolfe. Only the first two are back next year, so I'm hoping for addition by addition rather than by subtraction.

I LOVE it. There certainly isn't any Minnesota based quote that you can find inspiring. Is Peters gonna run the table? Looks doable til the last weekend of the season, and even then it can still happen, though not likely.

Yes there is. "Better dead than red." -- Gopher fans. I suddenly feel more inspired. ;)

Is Peters gonna run the table?
Sure. Why not. She'll just hop into a nearby phone booth and ... wait! Are there even phone booths these days??? Our Super Goalie plan has been thwarted!

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Guys, I agree with pretty much all that is being said.

I agree FiveHole that it would be good for Peters to relax and that we as fans are spoiled. I agree with ne7minder that probably the whole team needs to relax and the OSU series is fraught with potential tension and anxiety (if we can’t get a lead!). And I agree with pokechecker that what it boils down to is we need some friggin’ offense:

Niclole Schammel: score a goal!
Caitlyn Reilly: finish one off!

Enough with skating around like you are trying hard and looking like hockey players, we need you to score!

Cara Piazza: when you are down low feed one of your linemates in front of the net!
Taylor Williamson: when you are skating in hard with the puck like you do, spy one of your wingers and feed them for a perfect finish or a gorgeous give and go!

I pass along this well considered advice with the utmost affection and respect. GWH is still the best game in town :)

p.s. and bring back Cameranesi!

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Saturday I wondered if maybe they were trying a little too hard.

On offense, quite possibly. On defense, no. This is why I keep saying that the lack of secondary scoring was not itself the big problem; it's been the response to the lack of secondary scoring that's been the big problem.

Those of us who don’t inhabit Gopherland will have to get used to you guys naming names in something other than a celebratory context. The world turned upside down.

win 2-0 with her healthy in the lineup, lose 4 of the next five ...

people questioned how good UMD could be with only one line, how good can GWH be with only 2/3 of a line?

Isn't he the guy that wrote all those songs with Hammerstein? Why would Gopher fans be adverse to a little musical theater?

Sam and Janet Evening are younger than springtime, 16 going on 17, I think. Janet's stepsister's lament is that she enjoys being s a girl who can't say no and now June is busting out all over and Janet is telling Sam so-long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, good-bye

I enjoy a good musical. We have the Fireside Dinner Theater near us and wifepooh and I like to take in a gourmet meal and a musical once and awhile. It sure was some enchanted evening for Mr. Rodgers today.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

So, we got back late last night due to going to a church near Duluth and then stopping at the casino in Hinckley on the way south. I've sometimes wondered what happened to some of the flower children of the 60's. We met a few yesterday and it was not at the casino.

Random thoughts on the games.

KTDC beat me to my opening line. I agree with almost everything that's been written here about the games so far. My wife said after the 2nd period Friday, "I wonder if several of the players caught a flu bug. They have so little energy" I said, "Or maybe ate the same thing a certain Gopher goalie had before the frozen four in Boston a few years ago. Bad chowder?" (Still think the coach should have started Lura. Okay, probably would not have mattered.)

After her 2nd penalty on Saturday I asked, "What's gotten into Schipper? She has two penalties and could have had two more called?" Wife, "She's frustrated with the way the games going." Probably, but...

So after the 4th UMD goal Saturday my wife asks, "Did you notice how the Gopher players are not giving Peters a pat of encouragement after she allows a goal?" I did notice that after that allowed goal she skated out from her goal crease back and forth, maybe trying to relax? I also noticed one other Gopher skater besides the two goalies gave her a pat on the head as they went off the ice at the end of the period. So that's good. Maybe we all need to relax and just enjoy our wonderful Gopher hockey.

Rodgers, Hammerstein and also Kern? I remember back in the 70's, I think, watching the Tonight Show and Carson had a guest who talked about a feud between the composer's wives. There was a party and Mrs Jerome Kern was told by a guest how much she admired her husband for writing "Ol' Man River." Mrs. Hammerstein was there and replied, "My husband wrote Ol' Man River, her husband wrote Dum, Dum, Dum Dum!

At least the team recovered in the 3rd. Just had a chance to watch it on the DVR as I couldn't view it live. I thought the Gophers played very well that period, and if they had displayed the same level of energy in Periods 1 and 2, the result would probably have been different. They definitely had their chances to win it. But kudos to UMD on making a great offensive play at the other end, taking advantage of yet another defensive coverage breakdown allowing McGovern to get free in the slot. Stalder made a great pass, and McGovern did not miss. But it was encouraging to see the Gophers battle until the very end, with several near-misses that nearly went in.

After her 2nd penalty on Saturday I asked, "What's gotten into Schipper? She has two penalties and could have had two more called?" Wife, "She's frustrated with the way the games going." Probably, but...
Short answer: Schipper has a temper, and is not always successful in controlling it.

So after the 4th UMD goal Saturday my wife asks, "Did you notice how the Gopher players are not giving Peters a pat of encouragement after she allows a goal?" I did notice that after that allowed goal she skated out from her goal crease back and forth, maybe trying to relax?
Great observation by your wife. I did notice on one occasion that right after UMD scored an obviously frustrated Peters immediately skated to the corner and hunched over. She was not looking for any pats on the back, and I can only surmise that she was thinking to herself, "I should have stopped that one". Whatever best helps her regain her focus, I suppose, but most often it's a team defensive lapse that leads to the goal against, so it makes sense for the team to come together, just as they do when they score.

Maybe we all need to relax and just enjoy our wonderful Gopher hockey.
I do try, but like #6 I am not always successful. ;)

No worries Gopher Nation...your Head Coach will be back at practice this week after another successful U18 campaign!

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

To continue with the need to relax theme, it may be that when Peters makes a "HUGE" save (to quote someone else's favorite word) on a breakaway caused by one of those defensive breakdowns that we have seen way too much of this season, it will fire up the whole team and help everyone to relax, including the fans. Haven't seen many of those saves yet this season, but I'm confident they will come. Even my wife will relax then, she said.

I would love to see Ms Peters make a HUGE save or two.

And if helping your wife relax a little isn't a good enough reason for this to happen, I don't know what is :D
