Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

BTW - anyone else hear the interview with Nina Rodgers between periods of Saturdays game? Sounds like she is having a ball in Boston. She has 5 goals on the season compared to 8 in 2 years an MN. She is a good kid, her coach said she would be top 6 forward any any team in the country save 2. Playing on the first line she looked OK, still got the good hands & shooters eye but also gets knocked down too easily, still a great addition for any team.

she is outscoring all but 3 Gophers

players want to play, not sit on the bench, no surprise she's enjoying BU, frankly I was surprised she was on the 4th line last year

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

... go into Madison not knowing what sort of shape Potomak is in, 90%? 95%, 99%, 80%, will she even play?
shut out the Badgers with Cameranesi only playing half a game, let alone Potomak may not be 100%

come back from 2 goals down on BU
... a number of times, only to lose in OT
minus your top scorer, and Potomak may not be 100%

too much hockey left to throw in the towel and start talking about next year for this guy
the real season starts in a month

A good 'back to basics' article on "What is a 'Solid' Defenseman?"

http://letsplay.pointstreaksites.com/view/lph/news-1147/news_466296

Very good article...Thanks for sharing. I don't know if anyone else heard Lou Nanne on KFAN with Barreiro yesterday evening, but he was talking about it being easier to teach defense rather than offense with the caveat of the right attitude and putting the work in to do so. That was, in essence, what I referenced in the Gold Standard video earlier that the Gophers coaching staff talked about. See, I don't buy the generalized excuse that because most of the defense recruits coming into women's college hockey programs are chosen based on their offensive abilities, we shouldn't be surprised they supposedly aren't able to change. This statement in particular stands out to me from the verse of one:

"But I'll say (as I have before) that most D1 defensemen are recruited for their offensive ability not their defensive ability (playing good defense isn't particularly valued by many head coaches because they believe they can teach it and some asst coaches (recruiters) don't know what good defense looks like)."

C'mon man...first of all, coaches are teachers and if they are any good they are able to "teach" their systems and of course they believe they can. Second, I don't buy that good defense isn't particularly valued by many head coaches and that some assistant coaches don't know what good defense looks like. That is definitely throwing some folks under the bus right there. I make no claims to know if this is true out east but I don't think this is generally the case in the WCHA.

Look, other posters like ARM and KTDC, far more eloquently put into perspective the discussion going on in this thread about the issues Minnesota is having defensively so I'll defer to them.

because Lou Nanne lead the No Stars to so many Stanley Cups
it might be easier to teach a player how to keep the other team from putting the puck in your net than teaching a player how to put the puck in the other teams net
but it's more difficult to LEARN how to keep the puck out of your net than it is to LEARN how to put it in the opponents net
a coach can be a great teacher, but it amounts to nothing unless the pupil learns

a forward can take some chances in the offensive zone, in fact it is expected, worst that can happen is that you have a lost scoring opportunity, and you start back checking
if a blueliner takes a risk, anywhere on the ice, a high probability they are going to be saying they are sorry to the goalie

So are you pointing that out to say he's not qualified to speak on the subject separate from the sentence that follows? Or is that a lead-in to the "it might be easier" sentence? Makes more sense if it's separate.

Sure, no disagreement there...the right attitude and hard work are required from the pupil.

When all is said and done we will see if Minnesota's staff can affect some change and get the Gophers back to being more defensively sound.

That’s not what I’m saying at all.
My assumption is that Nanne, like most coaches, is referring to the fact that you cannot teach, or at least it is very difficult to teach, a player to become a goal scorer. In fact some say they are born, not made, which is of course not true. But it indicates the level of difficulty, and why college coaches, and pro coaches, are so hot to trot over high scorers.
Sure, people learn by being taught, but they also learn by watching others and trial and error. So if you have the best teacher in the world, only 1/3 of the process is covered.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2016-2017 (aka Season 20)

Can someone who follows closely give a summary of the Gophers injuries? Will everyone be ready for a second half push? Thanks.

Woken and Cameranesi with knee injuries. Woken for sure out for the year. Hope for Cameranesi to be back after the break.

I think Woken just got a little too deep into the season for a medical redshirt :(

I don't know if the NCAA has a strict cutoff, or if it makes any difference if you're a freshman, but yes 15 games is probably too many.

I checked into it and what I came away with is 1/3 of the season is some sort of baseline number.

Wondering if any of you historians can answer a question I have: Has the NCAA consistently year to year given the top 4 in the womens' hockey Pairwise the 1-4 seeds in the NCAA tourney, and 1st round home ice advantage? Have they ever deviated from that?

Yes, 1-4 is based on pairwise, the next 4 are assigned according to travel costs (mostly)

Saw the 3 kids from Minnesota play yesterday, Oden and Wente look good, but Zumwinkle . . . HOLE - LEE HANNAH! Gracie is a whole other level. I left feeling bad for the D she played against, they were not bad but she blew by them like nothing I have ever seen. Her shot is as hard as advertised but so accurate, on her first 3 shots she had 2 goals and an assist by putting the puck in impossibly small cracks. Obviously a small sample size but I can't wait. Add that word from Canada is Amy is better than Sarah and I think there will not be enough pucks to go around for all the goals scored.

You have to like the competition level she is playing as opposed to some of the other forwards that put up gaudy numbers playing outside the metro area. All that said, it is still a pretty big transition to college hockey so we will see how her potential and the rest of the classes' potential fit in next year.

Btw, you probably are aware of this but she has a sister who is an 8th grader playing varsity (defense).

The Breck coach thinks little sis may have a harder shot by the time she turns 18! It is always an adjustment to have to go up against the WCHA level of competition and I am sure she will have to develop but Gracie & Edina's Oden had wicked hard shots that look to be incredibly accurate. They won't lose those moving up. I assume they will have a harder time getting those shots but they will be get their share & then some I think.
