Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

While I agree Ramsey was big. I'd say the difference between this year and last is that while our players improved...UW's improved more.

all the MN blueliners are very good with skating with the puck
problem is, the puck moves far faster than anybody can skate
it is far better to pass than skate with the puck

IMO, their natural inclination when pressed is to skate with it, because that is what they do best
but that gives the opposition more time than if the puck were passed

Allways forward
On Wisconsin
see that around campus?

it was a subtle difference, but WI tended to move north-south when moving from defense to offense
how many times did you see the Gophers cough up the puck as they tried to skate around the WI defense in the neutral zone or around the WI red line?
I know it is kind of un-Minnesotan, but they were more successful when they dumped and chased, where they could use their speed, and their hustle horses.

better yet, pass the puck quickly and not let WI have so much time
pass/shoot quickly, who does that remind you of?

I've been thinking #14 comes back after the break........based on nothing but innate optimism and a desire for her to return.

I see
Brandt centering Cameranesi and Menefee
Pannek centering Potomak and Schipper
Piazza centering Garzone and Reilly

Certainly, agree that if she were done, that would be a shame.

Repeat after me...
Potomak is a center
Potomak is a center...
Piazza is a wing
Piazza is a wing

such a shame to see such pretty goals by Garzone & McMillen go to waste in a loss
they'd look really nice in a highlite film of a win.

Agree. I would even say that about the upcoming recruiting classes. I think Wisconsin Is going to be the one to beat for a while folks ....
they been the team to beat for what, the last ten years?
it ain't over till it's over

Piazza played both last season, and said at the time that she was more comfortable at center. I agree that on the current line chart, she'll probably stay at wing, but I think she could play either effectively if need be. As for Potomak, she's played wing all season. I'm sure she could play center if she had to, and do it well, and I'd bet Cameranesi could also, but I don't seen any line changes coming in the near future unless somebody gets injured.

Regarding future recruits, I think there are 12 players on the US and Canada U-18 rosters who are Minnesota commits. I'm sure Wisconsin has a boatload of talent coming, too, but it gets tough to try to sort through kids that are still in high school and project who is going to make the most impact.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Just printed my HOF game ticket. 8 bucks total with a small fee.
Beware the trap game! The Gophers are coming off an emotional, disappointing weekend and will be playing a much improved St. Cloud State team. Until losing to UMD this past Saturday they had put together a seven game undefeated streak, including six consecutive wins in the games they played in November. Yes, the Gophers should still win, but I'd be surprised if it's not a much closer game than the two played in early October. The Gophers need to be mentally prepared to play their best.

UW beat us to the open puck. They did seem to get the lucky bounces...but good teams just have that happen to them.

Last weekend makes UW's visit to Mpls very hard to predict.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

UW beat us to the open puck.

I'm surprised nobody complained about the ice.
There were several instances where passes just didn't have enough ooomph behind them, how many times did the puck fail to clear the zone, falling just short? ice, or player error?

if you practice on that ice, it's not going to affect you, if not, it's going to affect you at first

Well, great. Stuck at work and I just lost the audio feed for the game. The score keeps updating, and I can listen to the start of the audio broadcast, but I can't advance past the 1:33:51 point.

On the other hand, the updates have stopped entirely from Grand Forks.

Edit: It finally restarted on the fourth time I reloaded it.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

I thought it was a fabulous atmosphere. So many great women's hockey players in the building even without considering the 23 dressed Gophers and the full complement of Huskies.

Both mascots present, Goldy wins the face to face comparison, much better mascot. Shout out to the band, it is always a better game when the band performs.

Ronda Curtin, Winny Brodt, Chelsey Brodt, Kate Flug, all former great Raiders and later Gophers, all in attendance. Another former Gopher great Gigi Marvin was also in the building.

Special cameo I was stunned to see Hillary Knight and Brianna Decker. Hillary Knight one of the best players in the world just standing around without anyone taking any great notice of her presence. I bet anyone at Ridder Arena tomorrow will notice her presence.

And it was good hockey, a better game than the score. Saint Cloud can skate and they can play, what they do not have and what the Gophers do have is snipers, players with a scorer's touch. So many of these Gophers look so very dangerous every time they have possession. Among players who did not score a goal I thought Williamson, Pannek and Reilly all had strong games.

I thought it was fun. And I counted the rows of benches and need to correct my earlier post about the Roseville Arena, 7 rows of wooden benches, even smaller than my estimate. But a night of great hockey in that old building leads me to reinforce what I said earlier, good sight lines and you are right on top of the game. I thought it was fun.

As the talking heads on TV say, in view of the results from this weekend, the Gophers now control their own destiny.

It certainly is unlikely, winning out from the end of the fall semester is always unlikely, but if the Gophers win out they will be once again conference champions.

Simple math. Outside of our series with UW, we've lost one. They've lost one and tied one. If we win out including a sweep of UW (and a split of our record with them), we've got the better record. Is there a 50/50 chance of that scenario? That's about right.

That was the Roseville mascot, not the SCSU mascot (not that there's much difference).

Amen to that.

Catching up on some news...

Current Gophers Baldwin, Stecklein, and Piazza and alumni Bozek, Marvin, and Schleper invited to USA Hockey's Winter Training Camp in Blaine. U. of M. Press Release Full Camp Roster Camp Schedule

Anne Schleper interview on Gopher Sports Update - http://gophersportsupdate.com/2015/12/16/u-of-m-alum-and-us-olympian-anne-schleper/ (interview starts with Part 2)

Sarah Potomak featured in Sports Illustrated's December 14th Faces In The Crowd

Also it has been pointed out that Coach Frost needs only 5 more wins to tie and 6 to pass Laura Halldorson's career win total.

Finally... it appears that the Hall of Fame game was considered this year as a exhibition game, not as a regular season contest. I don't know when it was reclassified, but it explains why the Gophers were allowed to dress 23 players. I only noticed it when I saw that only 18 games had been added to Coach Frost's record for this season (rather than 19).

Wow that's... weird

I just looked at the formal press release put out by the U. after that game. It said...
** Note: Due to the number of skaters in the lineups for both Minnesota (20) and St. Cloud State (19) for the game, the statistics will not count toward either team's season totals. Records will remain the same, and it will be considered an exhibition game.

No discernible difference between a Raider and a Huskie? OK, over the course of history some buccaneers have been scurvy dogs. But really now.

Not being from Roseville, I have no clue why they have a canine mascot, but per several websites its name is 'Silver Fox'.

Well, to be honest, it looked more like an opossum but it was the raiders mascot.
