Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

If I may ask, who cares? I'm sure the team is more focused on improving, attaining their TEAM goals, one step at a time. As far as individual stats go, let the chips fall where they may.

Fair question and I'll admit, I'm a stats person...I just find it interesting, from a numbers standpoint, to look at how dynamic this trio is, especially since this line, with Menefee, was really good last year. There has been some adjustment with Potomak in place of Menefee and even with that they still have put up amazing numbers. I also think they are capable of being even better as the season goes along.

I also think that Minnesota's coaching staff does a good job of cultivating a team first environment so the team goals are front and center.

Not sure how you figure that it is a team first environment. First line maybe... This is a coaching staff that recruits as much for the team than against the other WCHA teams. It puts more players than could play elsewhere out of commission for most of their college career and then goes on to beat those teams by double digit scores. If it's team first then it certainly isn't women's hockey first. How does beating a team 11-1 bring any sense of accomplishment or satisfaction to elite players? I always thought to be the best you'd want to play the best but this coaching staff uses the motto to be the best lets just recruit all the rest.

I'm not even sure what that says, but every coach for every college team recruits as many as possible of the players that that particular coach views as being most helpful to his/her team having success. The college model isn't the same as the pro model that tries to ensure a more equitable distribution of talent. This week, I interviewed two of the Gophers that started out playing for other teams and decided to transfer to Minnesota. If players want to be Gophers, and realize that may mean that they don't get to play as much, then it is likely that Minnesota will wind up with more talent than certain other teams. The challenge for Minnesota State is to play at a higher level than it did yesterday, and its performances against UND and BSU demonstrate that it can.

You're kind of losing it a little bit here. You think Brad Frost isn't supposed to try his best so that everybody else has a chance? You think the Gophers take for granted they are going to beat Wisconsin.....or Boston College? Well they don't, and as Clarkson showed, they cannot start to take any of it for granted. Bemidji beat them twice and tied them once last year.

Last year they didn't even have 18 skaters to dress. They couldn't have proper practices so they expanded their roster. My opinion is it's too bad that Schammel and Reilly decided to transfer. The competitive landscape of women's hockey isn't perfect and has challenges. But your implication the coaching staff shouldn't act in their own interest is unfair and probably ultimately silly.

Do you think the Gopher coaching staff should tell players like Brandt and Potomak that they signed up to play at Minnesota, but now we are going to let up to give the other teams a fair chance? The Gophers are the flagship of women's hockey. God bless them for it. Doesn't mean they are going to be champions at the end of the year. And it doesn't mean they can take the day off because the schedule says a weaker team is up to play that day.

After seeing Bemidji my opinion is it's too bad that Stephanie Anderson decided to transfer. ;)

Like clockwork at least once a season...this "rational" whine...

Some day I hope we get to the bottom of just how Frost & Co. abducts...hypnotizes...and enslaves players against their will forcing them to be Gophers thus nefariously depriving the players...other teams and all of women's hockey. There are some very sinister forces afoot!

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Mankato video is not working for me........anybody else got it going?

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Maybe someone could post a "tweet" to the game blog. That usually helps.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Kudos to MSU-Mankato for playing so much better today and being within a bounce of the puck of doing some serious damage! Especially in front of the net covering the players so there were no easy rebounds and making it tough to get good shots.

But also, I am thinking it is lucky for the Gophers that they have Wisconsin coming up or they may have had a "Very Special Practice" in store for them this next week.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

I'm very glad for a tight game that still resulted in a victory. IMO, blowing out MSU a second time would have done the Gophers a disservice prior to the series in Madison. While I can't truly classify today's game as "playing under adversity", it again shows the players that they always need to work hard. Plus, it gives Coach Frost something to critique for the upcoming practices.

Also ignored is the fact that before this year there were never any healthy scratches, they often played with a short bench. By the fractured 'reasoning' you were responding to that means Frost & Co were leaving players available for other teams that they could have actually used.

“They came out really hard and battled like we were expecting, but I think things just weren’t going our way,” Cameranesi said. “Pucks were bouncing over our sticks and everything, and I don’t think we played with as much heart and passion as we could have or should have.”

That heart and passion going to be pretty key in Madison. Bring it. Match the glorified weasels in those aspects...effort and energy and I'm comfortable with prospects for success. Let the chips fall as they say...

May they be driven by being monumental underdogs!

Bad news form yesterday's game. Nina Rodgers took a McMillan slap shot off the ankle - loudly, it cracked - in the first period. She limped to the bench and was taken back and never returned to the bench for the rest of the game. I hope it is nothing more than a really bad bruise and she will not be out long. I have been impressed with her improvement this year, she is a much stronger skater that this time last season and I'd hate to see this causing her long-term problems.

Ouch, I know from experience how much that hurts. I sure hope she's OK.

StarTribune summary of yesterday's game: http://www.startribune.com/gophers-women-s-hockey-edges-msu-mankato-for-sweep/357396511/

“There’s a reason we talk about our values and fulfilling and embodying those and defining success that way,” Gophers coach Brad Frost said. “Sometimes you win a game where you didn’t play very well, and that was the case tonight. Mankato played extremely hard, played well. We did not do the things necessary to really compete and battle, so it’s disappointing that way.”

tell me. goalie skates used to just have a little extra leather on the side & 50 years ago boys did not shoot as hard as these kids do. I would not be excited to put my ankle in McMillan's way.

I tend to say bad things about coaches, particularly winning ones (early experiences are hard to overcome) but I do have to say Frost sure does have the right take on so many things.

that was tried by another Gopher coach, and most here don't need to be told how that ended up

Nina Rodgers took a McMillan slap shot off the ankle

when she winds up for a slap shot, that's your sign to get out of the way
yes, it would be unfortunate if she were lost for this coming weekend, I guess the good thing is she'll have a month to heal after this weekend if she needs it

your comment reminds me of a friend who was the salesman at a Cadillac dealership
he said he didn't sell Cadillacs, the cars sold themselves
it was his job to call the customers when the car they wanted was available
after first weeding out the dreamers from the people who would really buy

Monumental underdog?! Oh that's rich! You are kinda insulting them, aren't you? UM is #1 in scoring and PP, UW is#1 in defense and PK. I'd say it's a 50-50 series.
Minnesota gets the very best effort from every opponent on the schedule.

This is the one weekend where the opponent can be absolutely certain that turnabout is also true.

Wisconsin always gets the very best effort from Minnesota.

Two really good teams, should be fun.
