Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

At the BC-Yale game last year I felt that Yale were very good in patches, not afraid to push the bounds of physicality (and to be honest benefited from a lot of homer refereeing) and had a couple of top-tier players, Staenz in particular. Did you notice a lot of physicality from them this game?

Surprised to see them get three past Leveille though. I wouldn't have thought they were that good. What's up with the Gopher D this year? You still have Stecklein.

I thought Yale was very fast with a couple of players (88, 18) standing out with some fabulous moves with the puck. I noticed a lot of little things they did very well including the physical stuff, there are not afraid to mix it up. AS for pushing the boundaries every game has a number of little things I notice and Yale managed to be slightly above average on those, most notable a well thrown elbow that sent MN10 to the bench obviously stung.

Yale played very well, well enough that I find it hard to believe they only have 1 win. OTOH, I felt the Gophers played pretty halfhearted. As others have noted they often let off the gas when an opponent is done but this didn't feel like that. Maybe it was because Yale is that good or maybe they just didn't have their minds right but this was a lackluster effort from early on. I'd go so far as to say it was a men's team level of sloth but I don't want to be insulting.

Re: Minnesota Women's Hockey 2015-2016: Confection Free

As of right now, I'm not worried about this team. Unlike some of the others, I think the Gopher/Badger match up in a couple of weeks looks pretty even, and possibly slightly in Wisconsin's favor, but that's because Wisconsin looks to be very, very good, not because I think we aren't. If we can just get to that series with three more wins and no more injuries, style points don't concern me.

As I said elsewhere, I give the edge to the Gophers over UW. This is not based on their scores against other teams. It's based on the depth of the Gophers. I do believe when stacked against another talented team...even in Madison...they will overpower other talented teams and get pucks past any defense. Time will tell.

T Gophers didn't capitalize on numerous prime scoring chances, .

there were a lot of missed opportunities, plus I thought the Bulldog goalie made some real nice saves and robbed them of a few
Schippers pipe clanger, it looked to me like it hit the inside of the pipe, Potomak had a miss that would have been on the season highlite reel, it would be easier to say who didn't have a missed opportunity

the last 3 games have been physical, but unlike the last two against Bemidji, I think there were a couple that should have been called, they did call a few though

the Gopher D : unlike eeyore, I don't blame the forwards, there was only one even strength goal
Yale has a few players that are snipers, all 3 goals were nice shots

the D pairings have been juggled a bit, one problem IMO is that they are a little too offensive minded, the younger and less experienced ones in particular
one of them got burned from it last week, they sometimes look more like a beer league team or they are playing a pickup game at the pond

"A crowd of 1,932 was on hand for the game, and while official records are not available that was likely the largest crowd ever to see a Yale women's ice hockey game. "

From the game summary at Yale Website.

I think that would be true of most all eastern teams but it's too bad Minnesota is afraid to play some of them. ;)

It seems quite obvious that based on the results from this weekend in the future Minnesota will start ducking Yale as well as the other eastern juggernauts that they are already afraid to play.

Nice to see that all of the "3 Stars of the Game" announced after the game tonight were all defensemen - very rare!

#3 Milica McMillen
#2 Sidney Baldwin
#1 Lee Stecklein

Coaches tried, but Lindenwood said they only wanted to play teams they had a chance of beating. :p

Do you understand the word "exception"?

yes, I do, but it is hard to understand your blather

... In most of the games, the defensive problems have really been the forwards more than the defensemen. Tonight was something of an exception; by her standards, I thought Stecklein had a poor game, keeping in mind that that means she was just pretty good...

they (D) played much better last night
Baldwin in particular I thought played well and made good choices

it seems to me they took the opportunites that were given to them, rather than forcing the issue
with the consequence that they played better defensively and put 3 in

Gotta be much nicer for both the home team and visitors playing in Verizon Wireless Center vs. All Seasons.

Go Gophers!

If i have the stats accurate after the 11-1 win over Minnesota State, it's quite the scoring race between members of Minnesota's first line.

Cameranesi - 37
Brandt - 36
Potomak - 33

The teams, probably. For the fans, not so much. The tickets were twice as expensive and there were no concessions open until after the opening faceoff.

Looks like I shorted Brandt a point as she is listed with 37 to match Cameranesi.

If I may ask, who cares? I'm sure the team is more focused on improving, attaining their TEAM goals, one step at a time. As far as individual stats go, let the chips fall where they may.
