I think UW and Wisconsin hockey has come a long way, and I think in the next 10 years you will see more and more Kessel and Pavelski types players emerge. And that will be a great thing for Wisconsin, UW, and USA Hockey :)

agreed on all fronts. and I understand the pride on ice, I'd be proud too if one day I showed up at the KC and there were 24 Wisconsin born kids on UW and they were contending year in and year out for the title

to be truthful it's part of what stings losing to minnesota for me. to know that they're mostly home grown and if the WANT to be 100% MN again they can do it and still contend for NCAA titles

I guess it's part envy

but now let's get back to the series! Shuchuk will suit up this weekend! SCHUUUUUUUUUUUUUCHUUUUUUUUUUUK!

I'm going both nights now, can't effing wait

UW is much closer than you think to getting there. Ask Chuck. Wisconsin hockey has a little ways to go, but there is more and more talent coming out of Wisconsin every year.

And you know what I love about WI youth hockey? For the most part, it is community-based system like Minnesota (unlike Michigan). Players who grow up playing in a community-based system are far less likely to bolt to the CHL.

I still don't think I can expect to see a Gophers sweep just yet, even if I wouldn't be surprised to see it happen. They had to come from behind against UMD, they had to come from behind against UND, and they lost to VT all in the 2nd game of each series. UW may not be at their best but it's still a road WCHA series not against a doormat. The UW kids may be young, but they will be at home and UM has shown they can lapse. At times that is going to bite them and it's hard to 100% aver this is the series in which it won't happen. I'd be pretty comfortable betting 3 points, but even more going split.

For the Gophers:

-Get the PP back on track. Figure out during the week in film if the dropoff was due to the UND PK finding a weekness, did UM get away from what was working or did they just simply get robbed by Dell? I hate blaming an opposing goalie so I'm going to with a combination of the former two. I thought at times they stood still more than they had the previous 4 series and their PP really hums when the players without the puck skate to get open.
-Keep rolling 4 lines as often as possible. While UMD proved you can win with 2 lines last year, I doubt it's something you can do consistenly unless your goalie steals one. The Sat game against UND showed that the Gophers playing 4 strong can be devastating in the 3rd.
-Maintain consistency. Even though the Gophers have scored 14, 18 and 15 goals by period, 6 3rd period goals were scored against SH. However, they've only given up 4 in the 3rd period all season.
-Continue the development of Holl, Boyd, Marshall, and Warning.
-This point may be considered balderdash, but at what point do they play another goalie on Sat if they win on Friday? I actually give this point less than 5% chance so perhaps this is the wrong series to bring it up, but at some point Kent deserves a spell - preferably before the Winter break.

For UW:

-Who cares?

This is what Im hoping for!! Big time!! That would make the WI/MN Hockey rivalry the most unique in all pf college hockey!! The numbers look great.. Lets start a petition to get Superior on board with D1 Hockey eh!! That would be awesome.. Im way off track I know. WI is just begging for it, especially northern WI... Serious pipe dream but imagine the rivalries that could have been, Superior and UMD going at it in the NCHC, Madison and Minnesota going at it in the Big 10...

1. Gopher Arrogance means I always expect a sweep. (Was waiting for Brent to say that...) But the post that said they should sweep went a little overboard. This is Hockey! Anything can happen, even if you are playing Holy Cross. Bounces and hot goalies happen. It's not like they are playing Little Sisters of the Poor.

2. I only saw Fridays UND game (thanks to BTN :mad:), but I didn't think there was a major drop in the PP. They had some where they had multiple close chances and were stoned by Dell or just missed on the shot. UND was more aggressive, which seemed to have the most impact on the Gophs ability to gain the zone and set up. Once they did that, things seemed to work well. I am not too worried.

3. Two games a weekend for Patterson isn't really that much for a college age kid. In fact that was a question on the Friday broadcast and Gorg specifically mentioned it shouldn't be an issue. (Didn't Houser play about every game in 2001-2002?) IMO, The only reason to play someone is to get a little confidence in the back-up in case of injury, but, not having looked at the schedule, I would guess the holiday games will offer that opportunity.

Koho - Hauser played in 35 of the 44 games in '01-'02 (23-6-4 - must have been pulled in a couple games or else came in relieving Weber or Johnson and didn't record a W, L, or T).

Holy hell. Don't know if this is for everyone else, but for me the first linked video that pops up at the conclusion of Wally's "preview" is the *FULL* 1975 NCAA National Championship game between MN and Tech.

After just watching the first minute or so, the sound is wonky as ****...but given that it is from 1975 and judging from the pregame graphics, maybe it was intentionally meant to be really ****en trippy.


On a more present-day topic -
I'm worried about a let down, which is strange to say heading into Madison. I think it will be a real test as to the maturity of this young Gopher team whether they can bring 120 minutes of hockey this weekend. They need to get the PP back on track if they want to continue having the kind of success they have enjoyed over the first 10 games of the season. Dell and the UND penalty kill certainly were the toughest obstacle the Gopher PP has encountered this year, but 1-14 is pretty atrocious regardless.

As to whether or not the Gophers are "back"...
They have made a believer out of me. They have shown things through these first 10 games that we haven't seen in a LONG time. That being said, I can't shake the memory of 3 years ago when they sailed through the first 40% of the season, were ranked #1, and ended up missing the NCAA tournament. I actually made the comment at Christmas that year that unless they totally self destructed, they would make the NCAA's....and we all know what ended up happening. Of course, it didn't help that Okposo went AWOL and Hirsch went crazy.

The difference I see between this team and the team 3 years ago, however, is that this year's team has a lot higher ceiling and greater potential for improvement. The team 3 years ago came into the season playing in Feb. or March form. While the 2011 Gophers are playing some good hockey right now, I don't see that capped potential from them.
