Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Read the ****ing book. There are former players, high school coaches, USA Hockey officials, and a former NHL Comissioner who disagree with you.

You are asking someone on paint thinner to read a book? That's no way to win this argument.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

I
To all you Badger fans, no disrespect intended, I just think many of you really dont understand what makes a Gopher fan so proud, often misunderstood as arrogant.

Those that are arguing are not arguing against the pride that you have in hockey in the state of Minnesota. You can even be arrogant if you want, it's deserved, although the rest of the country is gaining and top level talent continues to come from more places all of the time.

The issue is that you try to intertwine pride in Minnesota hockey with the Gophers and they are separate. I bet Duluth fans don't consider themselves Gopher fans but still take the same pride in hockey in the state as a whole.

Why is this so difficult? We've all said that you can and should be proud of your STATE'S hockey tradition, but that the Gophers suck.

You're welcome.

Why? Was nine times your limit?

I didn't miss your point, I get what you're saying, but the fact is that kids don't pick up a stick going, "SOMEDAY..." they pick up a stick thinking "WHEEE.... this is fun!"

A major factor for why the sport grew in Minnesota was the fact that John Mariucci recruited in-state at the U of M. Whether that is why every kid started playing, continued playing as long as they did, ect... Probably differs with every kid.

Fact remains, a large number of former players, high school coaches, ect... of that era credit Mariucci's recruiting philosophy with the growth of the sport in state.

I believe that SCSU Euro may be a fan of someone other than the Badgers.

Not sure why I was thinking this...

WRONG! It is for both reasons together. That's the only thing that keeps them going for that long. My kid broke his leg on the ice during practice when he was 4, which I figured would be the end of hockey for him. 2 years later he is going stronger than ever. Sure you can use the same cop out Gurtholfin did that my kid doesn't speak for everyone out there, but I know it is way more than any of you want to believe.

So this same kid in Cloquet wants to play for the Gophers some day and not the Bulldogs who they may have season tickets for? Again, just a little too simplistic.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Gurtholfin - I have pointed you to a book, written by a guy who covered all things hockey in Minnesota for four decades with the Star Tribune, where he cites input from former great Minnesota hockey players, Gopher players, high school coaches, USA Hockey officials, and even a former NHL commissioner to support this point.

What have you produced to dispute this? Nothing but your opinion. Not good enough.

There have been quite a few Gophers from Duluth and one of our Hobies. I grew up on the Range. Almost all of us were Gopher fans growing up. I know three guys from my neighborhood two played for the dogs and the other Michigan they were all Gopher fans growing up. When I see any of my UMD friends or family there might be some gentle ribbing over the last series, but none would say the Gophers suck. To many of us played the game or had friends and family play to not respect a program that has done as much as Minnesota for hockey. Leave that kind of classless, uniformed stupidity to WI fans.

Yes, he grew the sport. Congratulations, you've proven a point nobody was arguing with you. I think Cookie Monster made an appearance a few pages back, hit him up.

I never said it might not keep them going. I just refuted the claim that it was what possessed kids to start playing. The first time a child plays hockey in Minnesota (assuming its pretty young, as it usually is for anyone who makes it to D1 hockey) they aren't trying to make any team a decade and a half down the road. They may eventually, but when they're that young they are just trying to do something fun. Remember.... 4 and 5 year olds don't spend all their time following sports, people our age do. :D

That was the EXACT point being argued.. Thanks for jumping into a discussion you don't understand and throwing your weight around though. And for reaffirming my point.

I.... AGREE.... JOHN.... MARIUCCI.... GREW.... THE.... SPORT.... OF.... HOCKEY.... IN..... MINNESOTA..... Just figured maybe that'd clear up I'm not trying to argue with that.

And what don't I understand? I've read as many posts in this thread as you have. I also have figured out he's not gonna read your book.

Your getting too stuck on that one minor point in the larger debate. Which was that Mariucci's recruiting strategies were a large factor in the growth of the sport in Minnesota. I never said the reason every kid played hockey was because they wanted to be a Gopher. That was put into my mouth.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

No, you didn't. You said this

So yes, a vast majority of kids who decided to play hockey in Minnesota did so because they wanted to some day play for the Gophers.

Not every, but vast majority? Got it. And again, I think the number of kids who started playing hockey bc they wanted to one day play for the Gophers is so small its non-existant. The number who grew into that dream after they'd been playing for several years grows exponentially.

Okay, come on by and you can break it to my son that he really doesn't want to be a Gopher.

It is fun for him partially because it is what the Gophers do. Now he's into it, developped some skill, made friends within the sport, and grown into the culture. And how did it all start? Oh right, I remember now.

I see the point you're making and I agree. I didn't articulate my point as well as I thought I had. Regardless, it doesn't matter. You seem to agree with me on the ultimate discussion we were having. And that was the impact of John Mariucci's recruiting philosophy on the growth of hockey in Minnesota.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Is this a thread about hockey cultures in the states of Minnesota & Wisconsin or a thread about an upcoming series between the Badgers & Gophers?!?!?!?

Back to the series...calling (hoping) for a split! Go BUCKY!!!!!!!

So in an alternate dimension where the Gophers don't exist, he never picks up a stick, puts on skates, never tries hockey?

I could certainly see a split. Wisconsin has been much better at home this season. The biggest key for UW this weekend IMO is to stay out of the box. Their PK has struggled and the Gophers PP has been pretty hot.
