Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Again, a few of you are trying to take EVERYTHING hockey that has ever happened within your border and attach it to the Gophers and being a Gopher fan.

Being a fan/enthusiast for hockey in Minnesota is great. You have a lot to be proud of if that gets you off. But when Tom Gilbert comes in to play the Wild, it has NOTHING to do with the Gophers.

The Gopher program and Gopher fandom is separate and its accomplishments stand and are judged on their own. And those accomplishments are quite good. Just not as good as ours or your neighbor to the west.

There is no question that hockey is bigger and has a prouder tradition in the state of Minnesota than hockey in the state of Wisconsin. No one would argue that. But that's not a feather in the Gopher's cap any more than it is a negative on the Badgers.

Not as good as yours.... pffft thats a joke, and a bad one at that.. Same number of championships, and a landslide when it comes to a head to head record.
Minnesota (the entire state) hockey fans regardless if they're St Cloud fans or otherwise can name you every Minnesotan on the opposing team, wether its Tom Gilbert or someone else, and thats not exclusive to Gopher fans even if your Gopher hatred cant admit it.

The fact that hockey is what it is in Minnesota and arguably Wisconsin is a feather in the Gopher hat, its something Gopher fans will always be proud of, hence why the fanbase would flip out if the program ditched instate recruiting.

Wisconsin hockey fans should learn the difference between arrogance and pride. When a WI Hockey fan comes along spouting their version of what makes/made hockey tick in Minnesota (past or present) and are corrected with facts, they should possibly learn to liesten, take notes, maybe even ask questions rather than fire back with more insults.

Pretty good chance Tom Gilbert and others would have never picked up a stick if Mariucci or the Gophs hadn't went the route they did, and a sad dark truth to you Badger fans, Minnesota will always be proud of Tom Gilbert. We dont boo the likes of a hockey player who plays for another WCHA team, even if that is the Badgers, i've NEVER witnessed that from a Goph fan. But I have witnessed your ENTIRE fanbase boo Kessel. Do you think thst possibly has to do with him being a Wisconsin native playing for the Gophs? Huge difference, but you wont recognize that FACT.

Gopher fans are no different than a St Cloud fan or a UMD fan (if they're Wild fans), those two will sit next to eachother and point out ALL the Minnesotans on the opposing team INCLUDING Tom Gilbert.

, Hockey in Minnesota is great. The Gophers are a solid program, but certainly not the greatest ever or most accomplished. And with the competitive advantages that you believe that you've had, you should be more accomplished.

That's certainly subjective. The Gopher program has done things that no other program could possibly do. Just because your program can't lay claim to those achievements, that doesn't mean the a chievements aren't significant.

I would bet money that you would be just as proud of the fact that Wisconsin won championships with only Wisconsinites on it's roster should your program have done that. It didn't, and that's why you are minimizing that accomplishment.

Lots of people at USA Hockey at the time, and a former NHL commissioner, disagree with you.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Yes. Kids in Minnesota aspired to A) play for their high school team and B) play for the Gophers one day. You still see some of that today, though not nearly as much. Shall I post a few recent articles uncommitted Gopher players to prove this point?

So, you're gonna cherry pick a few articles and say that it represents the views of the thousands of kids who play hockey in your state. They ALL play because someday they want to be a Gopher. I bet a whole bunch of them wanted to be firemen at one point also.

Now your just being an idiot. Why don't you call John Gilbert and tell him he's wrong. Or better yet. Write your own book and watch it get blasted by Minnesota hockey and hockey historians.

You can't just admit your wrong, can you?

It's a bit confusing that they can't separate the two. Recruiting in state means nothing when you don't have people to choose from. Minnesota may have grown in the post WWII years, but there are a LOT of reasons for that. And that's on top of the fact that the Iron Range was already producing a lot talent back then.

But whenever we don't give Mariucci all the credit for everything that ever happened, panties are twisted and we're being "ignorant" of the gophers' self-importance.

You had no clue of Mariucci (or the Gophs which you conveniently left out of your rant) and their impact on the sport prior to this discussion, which is why YOUR panties got into a twist when facts entered the discussion.

Kessel is the only Wisconsin native that has received that treatment. Your strokes on that subject are a little too broad.

To say that kids play hockey in Minnesota because they want to be Gophers some day is about the dumbest most simplistic thing I've ever read on hear. And you few aren't saying that it's one reason of many, you're saying it's THE reason. Please...

Did he say ALL?

The Gophers were the cream of the crop during the age when hockey was at its infancy in Minnesota all the way through the Woog era. Why do you think Minnesota gets so many Mr Hockey's or strong candidates year in and year out, is that because they prefer to play for the Badgers, UND or UMD? The fact is and what Dubbs is saying is ALOT of them do grow up as Gopher fans, and that all started with Mariucci's vision. That is a FACT.
You Badger fans are either in complete denial or lacking the knowledge to even have this debate.

You've had all of 3 WI natives playing for the Gophs, so i'd say right now its a pretty **** high percentage.

Again, they play the sport of hockey because they want to be a Gopher some day? That's your argument? The 25,000 or whatever kids, most of which are barely aware of college sports until 11 or 12 years old, go to practices and play games and their parents spend time, energy and money because they want to be Gophers some day?

According to this clown Gilbert didn't know squat about hockey.

Umm youth hockey enrollment in MN is much much higher almost triple that...

Answer my question, how is it the Gophs land so many of the high recruits if ALOT of Minnesota hockey players didn't grow up a Goph fan..

I'll wait

Youth hockey enrollment in Minnesota was <A HREF="http://unitedstatesofhockey.com/2011/05/23/raw-numbers-hockeys-growth-in-the-united-states-1990-2009/">53,450</A> in 2009-10.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

For as much as id like to waste more time talking hockey with badger fans who seem to know all there is to know about the history of the sport and mn hockey in general. I need to go waste my time getting things ready for a funeral..

Carry on with your narrow beliefs becky

Were the cream of the crop or got the cream of the (Minnesota) crop? I assume you meant got, because other schools, some of them right next door, were winning more NCs.

Or maybe I misunderstand the point you're making--wouldn't be the first time.

Re: Minnesota @ Wisconsin: Secondary Rivalry, Just As Much Hatred

Not only that, but we have to give him credit AS a Gopher and not just as an ambassador for the game.

I had the pleasure of meeting John Mariucci a couple of times. He was both a Gopher and an ambassador for the game to the game. He had time for both me and my young son. He took time to talk about the game we were watching with my kid. No. You don't have to give him credit. Your opinion is yours. We just know that you are wrong and we are OK with that. We know what we get when we talk hockey with Badger fans.
