Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

Re: Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

Funny he hits 28 in 09'. Gets the big contract and boom pretty much nothing power wise. 23 mil for a slap single hitter. His contract can end soon enough.

Perhaps you're unfamiliar with the concept of an outlier.

The twins paid him 23 million to save target field's opening years. It would look like it does now if they hadn't resigned him. This is such a bad argument that "he's paid to hit home runs" because it's just flat out wrong.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

Mauer hits .372 vs the Rays, his highest against any AL team.

I don't really care about the HRs. Sure I wish he'd hit 15-20 a year to back up his high average but he's not that player. 1B is a traditional power spot, but remember he is a converted catcher. Not a natural 1B.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

Clutch hitter? He's actually a better hitter in clutch situations over his entire career. With RISP and two outs his average is actually higher than his career average. Same with RISP.

Yet he averages a meager 59 RBI a season. One of the worse contracts in Twins history if not the worse.

Who gives a crap? This is baseball. The Twins have plenty of cap room, and it's not like that money would be used elsewhere if he wasn't getting it...;)

Re: Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

Ummm. He's averaging something like 88 RBIs per 162. That and RBIs is a terrible statistic to judge a player. Mainly because it requires players in front of him as much as it does him.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

Defend him all you want, I know what I've seen, and I'm far from impressed. 5 years ago, he was solid, now he's pretty mediocre.

To support dx, imagine the fan reaction if the Twins DIDN'T re-sign Mauer...

And RBI is indeed a bad stat for reference. It's like a W-L record for a pitcher, which relies on run support. See: Randy Johnson in AZ.

I'm with you. Grounded into 2 more double plays today. Awesome. Love the fact that the Twins are winning though. Future looks bright. Be brighter once Mauer and that huge contract is done.

I agree that they had to resign him, I just wish he didn't suck quite so much. The best thing he did today was not move his bat from his shoulder and luck into a walk. Huge improvement over his previous 2 double play balls.

"Luck into a walk..." Too funny. Maybe he actually could judge the pitches, and therefore didn't swing. ;)

Re: Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

And let's not forget Dozier trying to steal third and Mauer singling the next pitch.

He was trying to help Mauer out, because Mauer only hits singles, and it's hard to score from 2nd on a single. Duh.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

If Joe Mauer swung at every first pitch he saw, he'd hit over 100 home runs.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2014: The Quest for .500

Stupid Mauer. Beating the shift for a 3 rbi hit last night and breaking open the game.

What's he thinking leading the team in average, hits, and rbi's.

I have no idea. We should trade him while we can still get something for him.
