Minnesota Twins 2010: The Return of Outdoor Baseball

After three years of "upside" Gopher hockey I've tired of the term. I hope Delmon is lights out this year but up till now he's been less of a player than Punto the guy you disdain.

Up until now I couldn't care less. Young still has potential, while one thing we do know is that Punto will always suck beyond his marginal glove.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: The Return of Outdoor Baseball

you're really going to use a single play as the basis for an entire two month stretch?! Wow...
If you're going to call a player "extraordinary", you have to take everything into account - not just the one-sided suckfest that you and scooby seem to be engaged in with Punto's man parts. :p

For a player to justify his spot in the lineup, if he can't hit worth a crap, he's gotta do everything else well - that includes baserunning - and Punto's blunder was definitely "extraordinary".

Yes. He's a NINE HITTER who has some of the best offensive contributions to the team for two months.

Yippee friggin skippee. Harris is a better hitter, base runner and marginally worse with the glove. The only reason Punto plays so much is that ridiculous contract and he's a Gardy guy.

So playing one third of a season is all it takes to be an extraordinary player?

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: The Return of Outdoor Baseball

Yet his glove is just as good (if not better) and there's no comparison at the plate. Jebus Scooby, let it go. :)

Let what go? I don't think either player deserves disdain. Of the two players Punto has done a heck of a lot more than Young has. Will that change? No one hopes so more than I do, especially after seeing Garza again.

No, you're twisting my words. I said what he did in the last two months was extraordinary. Over the entire season he was mediocre at best.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: The Return of Outdoor Baseball

You're comparing a player in his early 30s to a player at the beginning of his career. Even players who reach elite status often struggle before the age of 25.

They're only being compared because of what Slap Shot posted. I certainly didn't open this can of worms. :p

Not that I'm saying you're wrong, but I can't think of a single "elite" player that struggled before 25.

Look at Torii Hunter and Justin Morneau's stats pre-25 and post-25 - it's really quite stunning how dramatically their stats improved... and before you say neither of them are elite players, keep in mind that Morneau won an MVP award a few years ago. :p

Note: Young will not turn 25 'til September.

Your answer should of been, getting a hit in one third of your at bats makes you an all-star. :D

And statistically, yes, you're correct. Morneau did struggle to an extent. But in his first full year he turned it around. This is delmon's fourth year. Additionally, morneau slugged over .500 and had an OPS of over .800 in his second year (over 74 games).

What I am/was concerned about is/was Young's complete lack of plate discipline and him being somewhat overweight and slow. Obviously things have changed. I'm willing to change my mind of delmon if he can put up numbers somewhat around where they are so far. Granted, I also don't expect him to keep up this pace because that would be ridiculous.
