Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

This lack of offense is getting rather tiresome.

Winning the division by more than 1 game would be boring TV, so they need to struggle a bit for the next 2 weeks.

If we can somehow waste our #1 starter in a play in game that would be ideal.

Everyone knows Cleveland has a dominant pitching staff 1 thru 5. So its no surprise the Twins would struggle to score runs. I mean their team ERA is right near the top at 24th (4.35).

They must be :p

Twins haven't been shutout in back to back games since Sept 7-8, 2002 against Oakland.

We're now potentially 1 innning away from that.

Back to back regulation shutouts.

We're well on our way to this one going into extras.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

This is the worst game in the history of time.

Re: Minnesota Twins 2010: Part IV - Thome's Quest for 600

And Jim Thome gets the Twins their first run in 21+ innings.

Haven't done the research, but that was their longest scoreless drought in at least the last 4 years.

Series tied at one, total of three runs scored in the series.

Do we have a #1 starter? I'd say Liriano is our most talented pitcher, but he's plenty capable of producing a clunker. Duensing has the best numbers, Pavano has been our workhorse, and both Slowey and Blackburn can look dominant or like they couldn't pitch for your local Little League team. Even Baker has had his moments -- BTW, is there word on if he'll ever pitch again, or is he seeing the same faith healer as Morneau?

If the Twins are going to have success in the post season they simply must score a lot. The pitching will be adequate, but won't shut any opponent down completely. The hitters will need to produce in two out situations and somehow quit hitting into so many DPs.

More important: The Twins are now only 2 back of the Yankees for home field advantage, and 1.5 behind Tampa. The Yankees and Rays play each other 6 more times this season. Home field is within reach.

That's true, although probably not very likely. I hope they have "July Delmon" bottled somewhere, because that vintage has been in short supply over the last 6 weeks and makes a big difference in the lineup. I'm not worried about Thome or Kubel, because at least they aren't afraid to be up in a big situation. Clinching early would help Mauer, because he seems to be a much better hitter when rested. Hudson could also benefit from a few days to get healthy. It would be nice to see past incarnations of Span or Cuddyer rather than this year's models, but it is more likely that what we see is all we're going to get. Maybe Valencia and Hardy will be the keys. If they hit, our O can be decent. If not, teams often tend to hold the middle of the order down in a short series. Morneau -- maybe next year.
