Minnesota State University Maverick Hockey: 2012-2013 Season Thread

That's probably correct. By my math, the magic number is eight wins in the final 14 regular season games, and winning the playoff series to feel pretty good about getting into the tournament.

So 10-6(or 7) probably gets us in with a win in St. Paul locking a spot down. Agreed. Would be nice to get a couple more wins than that; don't want to be a 4 seed. Although I'll be thrilled to get in. Can't get too greedy.

Looking at just the last 3 years, we likely need 33 points or more. Only one team with less (CC in 2011) got in, and only one team with 33 or more (UMD in 2010, with 33 points) missed out. FWIW

The line for home ice in the playoffs has been 28 points or better in the two years the league has had 12 teams.

With the NCAA tournament, keep in mind that having a 6-0-2 non-conference record(technically 5-0-2 since the UAH win won't count) helps a lot. Everything is still a rough estimate at this point, but SiouxSports RPI predictor has MSU staying at about the same RPI range(10-12) with 9 wins, and outside the tourney at 6 wins(18-20 range).

Would agree with you that I probably over-simplified by looking at just WCHA points, and that the non-conference will help, especially if Providence (or, less likely, RPI) get back into the TUC. But looking at results from the last few years, I don't think the conference tournament makes all that much difference in getting into the NCAAs. Unless, of course, you win the conference tournament.

The conference tournament often makes a world of difference. Last year, if North Dakota lost to Bemidji in the First Round, they likely would not have made the tournament. Instead, they won the tournament and got a #1 seed. My guess is if Mankato can win 8 of their last 14, that would likely be good enough to put them in position to make the NCAAs, so long as they make the Final Five. That being said, a lot matters as to who they beat for those 8 wins. If they sweep UAA, Duluth, Tech, and CC, but get swept by Wisconsin, Minnesota, and North Dakota, then it may take a nice run at the Final Five to have a shot. On the other hand, if they sweep their home contingent (Wisconsin, Tech, North Dakota, and 1 against Minnesota) those 7 wins may be better than 8 the other way.

At the end of the day, I'm enjoying the fact that we're even having this conversation regarding Mankato. Good luck in the second half, and wouldn't it be fun if that North Dakota - Minnesota State series was for the MacNaughton? :)

That would be amazing.

I don't know if my heart could take it.

If that series goes that way, rest assured Mrs. bigclean will be at the series with me and she is a trained nurse (cardiac and ER experience) and would love to pull out a pair of paddles and shock your backside...

Needless to say it all begins with tomorrow... need at least 3 this weekend.

I think we need 4. Yes, Bucky has been on a run, but so have we. If we sweep, that would be a confidence booster, plus we swept in Madison, and now we are in our barn.

Must have 4

I think the necessity is three, but we should get four. It's a totally different Wisconsin team with Kerdiles back and they have a lot more confidence as well.

Tough weekend.

A long week and it's going to be a necessity to get four points next weekend.

Hastings said it best when he said that this program hasn't had to dig deep and win close, tight games over the last four years, and that they all need to learn to do so.

Well, we all knew that there were going to be some pretty big bumps in the road in this season. This one is a tough one to take. I really didn't think MSU played all that well this weekend. I thought they were messy with the puck and had way too many times where Wisconsin dominated the puck for a minute+ at a time. 38 seconds of not giving up goals in OT and MSU is tied for 5th rather than 8th. On the bright side, the league is so tight right now a single weekend can take you from 8th place to 1st place in the blink of an eye.

Wisconsin did a great job of being physical with us, and they forced us to play their game, instead of our style of hockey. Plain and simple. We didn't adjust well enough and lost two games because of it.

The team defense has been outstanding during this run, however Wisconsin wasn't the same team this past weekend that the Mavs faced in November. The Mavs handled themselves pretty well defensively during both OT periods as they only allowed one shot on goal in each of the OT's. Unfortunately both went in.

The Mavs need to sweep next weekend, although the Seawolves are a tough opponent at home on Friday's. Then the Minny home/home set the following weekend will be a gut check. Mavs split the set in early November winning at home.

I was happy with the team defense overall. I just thought there were some messy spots where WI dominated the puck. The breakdowns in overtime, especially on Friday shouldn't happen though. Ramage should have been taken off the puck and was able to skate down the center of the ice. Those are the kind of things that will change. Hastings won't allow that to happen on a regular basis. I'm confident of that.

While I am also confident, Saturday kind of shook that confidence even more. Ramage was allowed to take the puck from the point, beat the wing who watched him skate down the wall, danced a defenseman who was lazy and didn't drive him to the outside with contact, and Ramage buried an easy one.

I don't give a **** if UAA is tough on home ice on Friday or Saturday or whatever. If we want to establish ourselves as a team who wants to contend, four points is the only successful outcome this weekend. PERIOD.

I see what you're saying and to an extent I agree. I always have to remind myself that college kids will likely have off weekends. I think MSU was due for that. They have played nearly flawless hockey for a month and a half.

I do agree with you on this weekend with UAA. At worst, it needs to be 3 points, but with the situation the way it is I think 4 points should happen. If there are that many lazy plays this weekend, we have a problem. I'm not going to get too concerned over a single weekend though.

Why be complacent at three points? UAA is 1-12-3 in conference play. That is absurdly atrocious. After last weekend there should be no excuse to play like these two games are playoff games. They better get four points, or it's a failure of a weekend.
