Minnesota State University Maverick Hockey: 2012-2013 Season Thread

Re: Minnesota State University Maverick Hockey: 2012-2013 Season Thread

Congrats to the Purple Cows! Please keep beating the non-conf foes. It's up to you, the Gophs, and Tech the way things are looking...

The Mavericks played well again defensively! They are pretty suffocating at times!

Moved up to 14th in the rankings! 9 out of 10 is pretty amazing!

Bring on the friars!

This is a big week for us. Need to keep getting better and finish with a couple of wins.

Re: Minnesota State University Maverick Hockey: 2012-2013 Season Thread

Gotta sweep out the last of the non-conference schedule as it'll be big for the pairwise points. Starting to feel a little like 2002-2003 again, that was a goooooood season.

Re: Minnesota State University Maverick Hockey: 2012-2013 Season Thread

15 unbeaten.. That was one hell of a ride.

Reminds me in some respects of this team, because that team was supposed to be an average, middle of the pack type team in 2002-2003...

Here's a zstory about that team.... Jutts expected them to be so good the following year, he originally told Backes he wanted to try and redshirt him his freshman year because he figured he'd have Jackman, Joseph and Stevenson on his 1st line in 2003-2004 (let that bounce around your cranium for a moment). Instead the plague that Jackman was took off, the team jelled, took an amazing ride, and Stevenson took off way to early because of it; (therefore I can once again blame Jackman for being a Jack-Off, which I haven't done in years) so Backes plays every game his freshman year and develops into a STUD more quickly, takes the pressure off Morin and a few other guys and lets that group become solid.

I am so happy for what this new coach has done for this program.

With Latvia eliminated, will Blueger make it back to play this weekend?

Re: Minnesota State University Maverick Hockey: 2012-2013 Season Thread

Latvia plays in the relegation round on Friday so Bluegar(s) will not be back.

Thanks for the info. And you make a good point - If we're discussing his Latvian play, I guess I'm supposed to use Teodor's Latvian name!

I just threw it in because I get a kick out of it, that's all. Would American's names be changed if we are in Latvia?

Backes redshirting never was going to happen.. Also lets not forget we lost Jerry Cunningham that year because of academics. He was a 10 plus goal scorer..

And the conversation was had, like I said, it just never happened due to changes in the personnel. And the even better question is what happens if Jason Jensen doesn't leaved the program, Volp wouldn't have been the only respectable goalie

Interested to see how this team eases back into the more rough and tumble WCHA play after this weekend...

I was always amazed that Jutting didn't offer Jensen a scholarship to come back. He was academically ready to graduate, so essentially Jutting was asking Jensen to pay for credits he didn't need in order to play hockey.

This story makes no sense for a couple of reasons:

1. Jackman left in the summer of 2002, before the great 02-03 run with Stevenson and Joseph. During 02-03, Backes was playing junior hockey in Lincoln and already committed to MSU.

2. Even with Jackman and Stevenson on the team in 03-04, you don't think the Mavericks would have found a way to get David Backes in the lineup? Redshirt? That's funny. Say what you want about Jutting, but he wasn't that dumb of a coach.

3. Also, do you think they were going to play Travis Morin as a freshman in 03-04 but redshirt Backes? Again, makes zero sense.

Backes committed to MSU when he was in high school. Maybe if he didn't play Juniors and came to MSU right out of High School they would have red shirted him. MSU has had a few kids come right out of high school that never really developed like they should have. Redshirting him coming out of Lincoln? Come on..

HUGE win tonight. Gutsy and gritty. Providence played well and they work very hard.
