The best thing about this team is that they have a defense! In the last 22 games they have only given up more than 2 goals 6 times, while only losing 3 of those games.

Stephon is 17-5-1 in his current 23 game streak as the starting goalie with a GAA of 1.83.

Have to like that!!

Prior to the games this weekend...

10th in the country, Stephon Williams is 15-7-2, with a .930 save percentage and a GAA of 1.79.

Similarly, Minnesota State ranks tenth in the country in Team Defense, allowing 2.27 goals per game.

More importantly, they're now 7th in the Pairwise.

It was a pretty special goal! It would be much better for us to avoid playing Wisconsin for the 1st round. I think there are 7 viable teams and then the rest.

Ugh, I note that the Purple Cows were 1-8 on the power play against an over-matched opponent.

Hastings was in charge of UNO's horrific power play here. UNO only had 25 power play goals last season in 146 attempts (worst in the WCHA).

Hastings walks on water here in Omaha and he has some major street cred. That said, it will be interesting to see if you guys have as dyslexic a power play as we have had under his tutelage as your season goes on.

A power play hallmark was the utterly ridiculous amount of dump and chase that went on, a lot of the time, for no discernible reason. Battles that UNO didn't win very much. Seriously, I am not making this up--more often than not, UNO looked better on offense, short-handed, than they did on the power play last season, a comment buttressed by the fact that UNO was 2nd in the nation in shorties last season with 10 goals scored.

You've been warned. I don't seem to recall his Lancer's teams having this problem, though. For the most part, those teams were so good it might not have mattered much, anyway.

Hmmm. Lets see how our power play is doing now that we have exactly 146 attempts. 34-146 23%. 2nd in WCHA. 4th in the nation.

Hilarious that somebody remembered this and dredged up my commentary.

What's interesting is that UNO's power play started like a house afire this season and has steadily regressed to the point that we are now "down" to #22. Me and a whole lot of other UNO fans are beginning to think that maybe Coach Hastings wasn't the problem here. Coach Blais is getting some heat because, and you need to sit down to comprehend this, UNO was whistled down for their 12th (twelfth!!!) too many men on the ice penalty of the season in the first period of the outdoor game with the Fighting Whioux a week ago Saturday. That's as many times as UNO has had this penalty called on them in them in the last 6 seasons combined!!!! Coach Blais keeps saying that this is his fault. That has everybody around here scratching their heads wondering if he's getting senile, particularly since he keeps telling the press here that the strength of our team is the defense, despite the fact that UNO has given up more goals that ANY team in the country with a winning record, and has also scored more goals than any team in the nation. There has been some discussion about whether he's taken leave of his senses. Apparently, he and his players cannot count to 5.

Too many men on the ice is a ridiculous penalty in any event and to have it called on you 12 times to this point in the season (and the season isn't even over, yet) is beyond ridiculous. It's absurd.

Hastings got all the blame for our power play last season and there are plenty of second thoughts around here now about that.

Re: Minnesota State University Maverick Hockey: 2012-2013 Season Thread

I have noticed that the last couple of weekends the MAVS have used a "behind the net" powerplay set up and have gotten some nice chances with it. I have no idea who on the staff came up with it but it seems to be different enough that teams haven't seen much of it and it is creating chances. I just hold my breathe when they make a pass out front and the forward doesn't make contact. In past seasons that would often lead to an aposing forward headed the other way with speed. I think one difference in that senerio this year is the defense is playing a better point game and are in better position.

I think they've actually been practicing it all year, but haven't actually started using it in real games until just recently. They did it in the first exhibition game of the season. I was so surprised to see it at the time that I made sure to comment about it to my buddy. I think the key is that the defensemen have been responsible enough to make sure they are at the blue line and if they are pinching up the wings are aware of it and are preparing to cover. It's a very responsible group effort to make sure they don't give up those types of chances too often.

BTW, games in Mankato are much better with a band. I enjoyed hearing them last weekend.

I just wish they hadn't moved them to right behind me. It's deafening. They used to be down in the student section.
