Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks - 2013-2014 season thread

Re: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks - 2013-2014 season thread

Two much needed, and deserved, wins last weekend. Nice to see the monkey off their backs! Let's hope they can carry that momentum through to St. Cloud-

Watched game 1, and Butters had some big saves (save of game was a back door save on a pk). Also, I am surprised interviewer didn't mention or ask about the fact that Barnes was moved back to D (like she was most of last year). It looks like the move paid off. It will be interesting to see if he keeps it that way going forward.

Re: Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks - 2013-2014 season thread

The Mavs played two excellent games against Ohio State - it was like watching a different team. Not sure what turned it around...or if it will continue this weekend...but they were two fun hockey games to watch (if you were a Maverick fan). Congrats to Savannah Quandt on her first collegiate goal, and for her WCHA honors.

Preview for the matchup against St. Cloud State (looking forward to seeing the remodeled facilities): http://bit.ly/1bdQeR2

Didn't see the Friday game, so can't comment on the lopsided score. However, Saturday's win against SCSU was very solid. The team held strong, even under 3rd period pressure from the Huskies. They moved the puck well, and Kirchiver earned her first win of the season. She seemed a little shaky to start (understandable), but settled in and seemed to give the Mavs confidence as the game went on. Looking forward to the North Dakota series this weekend.

So, the big event is just a few days away. Any thoughts about the up coming series?

Per the weather forecast...shouldn't have any problems with the ice in TCF. No standing water after resurfacing. Dress warm.

Geez, maybe no standing water during resurfacing. I may not be able to dress warmly enough. Looking forward to it, though. Hope there is a big turnout for the women's game.

Hope so too, although I'd expect a lot of empty seats (in a stadium that holds just over 50,000) at 4:30 when they drop the puck. Still, they should have no trouble beating the 8,263 who showed up at Camp Randall Stadium in 2010 to see the Wisconsin/Bemidji State game which, according to the article that brooky linked in the WCHA thread, was the first women's outdoor WCHA game. Anyone know what the all-time record is for a D1 women's game?

There's a Wikipedia list of all (?) outdoor games since 2000; according to it, the Camp Randall game with 8263 is the most for an outdoor women's game. The 2012 (indoor, at the Kohl Center) Wisconsin "Fill The Bowl" game against Bemidji drew 12,402. I don't know that anyone has beaten that.

If they're going to break the record they're almost certainly going to have to do it without me. Sitting out in the single digits and below zero wind chill for a hockey game I have trouble seeing from my seat does not sound appealing.

If that is the attitude of one of the few people willing to travel to Columbus to watch a regular-season women's game, then I don't like the chances for a record.

As, uhm . . .

<flips through a thesaurus to avoid irritating pgb again>

. . . eccentric as the rink in Columbus is, I could at least see the game just fine.

Well I didn't travel to Columbus but I'm going! :)

[sure hope the old snowmobile suit still fits ;)]

But when you're old and gray (next year) you'll be able to say that you were there on Friday (assuming that you don't expire in the cold). Nobody will care that you witnessed the games in Ohio. Even pgb was unimpressed. Actually seeing the game is overrated. Just bring some headphones, listen to Dan, and start spelling Minnesota every time the Crazy one does. You'll thaw out in time to drive to Mankato on Sunday.

Actually the ice will be junk if the air temp is colder than the ice temp as the flood freezes as it's own entity rather than bonding with the ice.

Don't know about "junk" but it won't be ideal, that's for certain. The latest forecasted HIGH temperature that day is 11 above, so by early evening it will be in the high single digits. The ideal outdoor temp for making good ice that holds up well is around the 20 degree mark, so it could very well get a little chippy towards the middle and later stages of each period. I'm just happy they didn't have this thing 7-10 days ago...with a minus 40-50 degree wind chill there probably would have been 20,000+ no-shows (me included) for the men's game and definitely no record for the women's game.

The only thing that might get me to go is that if I don't, it will be the first league game, home or road, that I've missed in two years.
