Minnesota State 23-24: Getting back the mojo post haste

Well a 2-3-1 start. Some ups and downs already, but I'll personally take it. Some things to work on during the off week (the powerplay) but, especially with the way the rest of the league has started out, I don't see why this team can't compete for another MacNaughton.

Some of the inconsistencies you'd expect with a mostly inexperienced team, particularly defense and goaltending. But also some flashes of brilliance. The effort is there.

If you would have asked me before the season started would I be OK with a 2-3-1 record after 3 weeks (especially with who we played), I would have said "absolutely". I now am confident that we will do all right in conference play, now even thinking we have a very good chance for another McNaughton.

We have played 3 very good teams so far.

Swept at home last weekend, take five out of six points on the road this weekend. Looks like it's gonna be a schizophrenic season.

True, there are a lot of positives. I'm a little concerned with our 3rd periods (and maybe I'm still focused on the 7-6 loss to Bemidji) as I thought LSSU outplayed us in both 3rds this weekend. But we do a lot of things well. Penalties were interesting. Almost none Friday, then a ton on Saturday. I think we were trying to be more physical, but it was almost like the refs decided they hadnt called enough on Friday.

Now, beat the Tommies!

Third period on Friday was the roughest 20 minutes I've seen from this team in many years, minor miracle to come away from that one with the majority of the points. Turnovers and not being able to get the puck out of the D-zone have been a problem, seems like there's been a dozen times where it instantly results in a goal against. At least both goalies are playing well.

Agreed, beat the Tommies!

Well, that was disappointing. Giving up the lead in the third to the Tommies isn't good. Just a bit of info if you're unaware: next weekend's games at RPI in New York will be on ESPN+.

It's probably becoming pretty clear that Ferris is once again not a very good team, but still awesome to see such a complete performance on Saturday. Great opportunity to get on a roll the next two weekends, also.

Saturday's game was probably their best of the year. Got the early lead and didn't have a third period let down.

It was the first game this year where we looked like the best team for all 3 periods. We've had a lot of good moments, but this was a good game. And I continue to be impressed by Sam Morton. He didn't have to come back, but boy, I'm glad he did.

Morton staying for his final year of eligibility is huge. He carried this team offensively in the first half. Hopefully others will pick up the scoring slack- especially the underclassmen.

Now we need to keep it rolling and get 6 points this weekend.

Nice complete game Saturday night (The refs extending the game by at least 10 minutes because of their ineptitude notwithstanding). Good news - Everything we have to do is right in front of us! We get a shot at all the leaders over the next month. Let's go Mavs!
And Sam Morton for Hobey Baker!

Nice gritty win by the Mavs last night...although that 2nd period wasn't something to behold. Trotter was awfully good in goal and kept them in the game. Mavs are home tonight and seem to play better on Saturdays. I like their chances. Carpe Diem, Boys!

Well Saturday kind of sucked. Props to Trotter because he played great but it also seemed like he was in our head a bit down the stretch. Also (and I know it would just be a footnote if the Mavs would have limited their mistakes and popped in another goal or two) but holy moly that officiating crew had a rough weekend. Seemed to be making it up as they went.

Agree on trotter. The save on morton looked like Sam misplaced it. If he goes near post rather than far post, I'm not sure trotter has a shot.
Also agree on officiating. I've, frankly, been underwhelmed the last 3 weekends. It never ceases to amaze me how officials can't figure out that if you let clutching and grabbing go it slowly disintegrates into chippy hits and eventually into checks from behind and on and on. Its disappointing.

FloHockey won't load, either on Roku or the phone app. Others having the same problem?
