Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

Re: Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

I feel like I'm wanting ohio to win almost every week in the B1G. The only teams I don't want them to beat are penn state and obviously, Michigan. Hell, I even watched their women's team beat minny in a shootout Saturday at intermission of Michigan's game.

I feel kind of dirty.
Don't feel bad, many Buckeyes root for Michigan's teams when they're not playing us, myself for one.

Re: Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

They tied. Still, embarrassing to MN. Horrible.

Not horrible at all depending of course on one's perspective. Our women's team is improving since the coaching change. Hopefully the same will be said of the men's program by seasons end.

Sounds like you guys will be having a great time. Doesn't sound like there's any worry for rain like they had in Boston's outdoor game. LOL!
Wish I could be there for it but TV will have to suffice.
Last Friday we came out of the gate hard and had some good rough & tumble hockey with Sparty, Saturday we played slow & lazy. I hope we give a good account of ourselves Friday against you.

I'm sure you guys will.

It looks like you have only 2 losses since Nov 1st and you are a heavy upperclassmen type team, the Gophers will have their hands full. What type of game does Ohio State like to play? Up and down the rink or more of a sit back and wait for opportunities to present themselves?

I watched their game against Michigan State last Friday. They can push the pace. Not as much team speed as the Gophers, but they certainly are not lacking in that department. They've got some good skill up front, and their power play looked pretty effective.

That said, they looked pretty undisciplined defensively to me. They made more than their share of defensive misqueues. They have gotten good goaltending lately, but it seems it has been inconsistent this season.

Should be a good seties. I don't expect the games to be low scoring affairs.

The game at Mariucci could be fun to watch then, hard to say about the TCF Bank game, depends on ice conditions.

You're right about the goaltending since OSU has had six goaltenders on the roster so far this season. The projected starter (Olson) left because he got outplayed by his back-up (Tomkins) early on. Tomkins got hurt a game later and they went to a walk on (Davis) for the next five games and even brought in the catcher from the baseball team who played high school hockey in Minnesota (Aaron Gretz) and a California kid from the club team. After the first semester ended they brought in a kid from the USHL who looked good in the two games against Mercyhurst.

Soooooo - sort of hard to develop any consistency in goaltending when they've had to do everything but pull someone from the stands to fill in during a game.:D

I've made the other two outdoor games (Cleveland and Lambeau Field) but I'm watching this one from home.

Yeah, they talked about that on the broadcast. Certainly does explain the inconsistency. The fact that they had to deal with all of that and have the record they have is impressive.

As I said on GPL, use your best judgement on layers, but make sure to wear winter boots!:)

I'm not too worried about the layers because I'm an ice fisherman;), but cold feet are no fun!
Several layers of really good, warm gear, and good thermal socks with Sorel boots... I should be fine :D (Thanks for bringing it up, though, more information is never a bad thing in circumstances like this)

Re: Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

Defense and goaltending have been weird. Collin Olson from up there in Apple Valley was our backup last year and was supposed to be the starter. He gave up too many soft goals in our early games and they put Matt Tompkins, a Under 18 product in as starter. Instead of working harder to get the starting spot back Olson has a hissy, quit and left school. Tompkins was doing great and then got injured so we had only the practice goalie left!
Here's where it gets ironic, we got the catcher from the baseball team to be a goalie on a short term emergency basis, Aaron Gretz. Aaron is also from Apple Valley and was the teammate of Olson in high school and he was the starter there, not Olson!
Things have stabilized now as Tompkins is healthy and back in net and we got a kid from Texas, Christian Frey, who enrolled for this semester but they are all freshmen.
We lost to Michigan both games by 1. If Tompkins was in net for those games we might have won those.

Aaron Gretz Ice Hockey Bio. I bet he is thinking I can't believe I am getting my picture taken for hockey.

Ish.

I wish I paid more attention to the OSU/MSU game last Friday, I'd have a bit of more perspective on the visitors this weekend. I'd like to see the Gophers demonstrate more consistent energy, hopefully the setting for each game will do the trick.

Re: Minnesota hosts Ohio State: 1/17 & 1/18

Looks like some cold temps for Friday, I will be in the upper deck up in section 226, I hope my flask of whiskey will survive the security shakedown. :)

Defense has also been an issue especially in the first half of the season when they would blow coverage on faceoff hanging the goalie out to dry so we get scored on seconds into that game and this happens in several games! Fortunately the defense has gotten much better and really seemed to step it up when the practice goalie had to start, they didn't want the kid to get killed. We lost the one game to Michigan when one of our players let his man blow past him for a play on the far side of the net.
Friday against Sparty we did more hitting that we did all season and it seemed to have worked well for us. But Coach Rohlik for the most part has tried to continue what Oseicki started, trying to mold this team into one with speed and attack.

Appreciate the insight into the squad. These teams are going to be getting to know each other on a regular basis now.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. Watch Dzingle on the ice, he's our best sniper and had the B1G's first hat trick last Friday.
Minnesota has played on our ice at the 2005 Frozen Four.
Were any of you here for that?

We have never played you here at home but Minnesota has played on our ice at the 2005 Frozen Four.

They came to Columbus in october 2006. The Buckeyes returned the favor in October 2007. I made that trip.
