Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

My first reaction was that the parents were probably going nuts. Then I remembered, through my experiences coaching hockey, that a kid like that may have been inclined or encouraged to do something this idiotic by his parents. (Or that the parents would approve of such behavior)

As a coach, I'd be so frustrated. I don't know the situation, but this was his ninth start, and it was on Senior Night. Something seems odd.
I'd wager that the coach platooned the goalies early in the season, and then the childish senior got beat out by the more talented sophomore. It happens all the time where the younger goalie earns the start. Heck, look at the Gophers this season. Wilcox was not anticipated to be the man in net for most the season.

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

Sounds like there was a lot of issues between both goalies and their families, so they may have found it great.
My favorite part is he acts like that and wants to go into the Marines.
Hopefully he'll see how well they like non-team (unit) behavior like that.
Marines? Gunnery Sgt. Hartman is going eat him alive...

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

I see in the comments at Deadspin and the Strib the backlash has begun!

(That coach probably deserved it / That kid did what we all wish we would have done / If he was being treated unfairly by his team they can't complain when he treats them back. )

I know the feeling. When that happens to me, I like to shoot a puck in my own net to vent my frustration and %*$% my teammates.

From a MN Hockey Hub article...

The mother of a Farmington student who filmed the incident said her son was told by Krause to “have your phone ready’’ at the game. Jodi Kelly said her son, Alex, was told by Krause, “I want you to do this for me.’’

Kelly said school administrators called her Wednesday morning and asked that the video be taken down, which the family did. She said her son is not a member of the hockey team.

"We've heard there has been some drama within the team the entire season. So in (Alex’s) mind, he was being a loyal friend to a friend who felt he was wronged," Kelly said. "As a parent you're torn. I wish he wouldn't have shared the video. There are more productive ways this situation could have been handled. It's unfortunate."

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

Kid and parents have put many hours, years of practice, games, clinics, camps into the sport. Money money money goes into sticks, camps, equipment etc. They have high expectations and maybe even a somewhat skewed view on their own kids abilities and talents. They expect him to be the starter because he always had been. But this season seemed to be a time to teach the kid life isn't always fair, competition is hard, you don't always get your way. Sports can teach kids all about those aspects. Maybe parents didnt take this as an opportunity, maybe the kid dismissed them. I'm sure we'll hear more details from both sides someday.
Disappointment is a big part of life(at least mine anyways). My initial reaction is this kid thought "I'm not the number 1 goalie and it's your fault." Hope he doesnt have younger sibs that wanna play. May have nailed that door shut.

Sounds like the senior parents weren't fans of this coach and thought he slighted them in favor of younger guys who they thought should be JV.

Krause (the senior) posted a 2.8 GAA and .877 SV%. Overby (the sophomore) posted a 2.42 GAA and a .901 SV%. Coach has a pretty solid case for giving more time to Overby.
First off, I wouldn't count the mnhockeyhub stats as fact because it says that Krause played all 51 minutes last night and gave up all 3 goals, which isn't true, because he quite with like 3 minutes left and didn't give up the GWG so who knows what else is wrong with that.

The stats were in the article (and you are right he quit with 3:13 remaining and it was the tying goal). No idea where the author got them...

Re: Minnesota High School Hockey 2012-2013

Oh man...

Whatever the reasons, that's not the way to handle it.

That is what I get out of this...what an immature response...even for a HS kid. He was getting 50% of the playing time and if he was a great kid, deserving of a 'break' since he was a senior, he wouldn't have the capacity to do something like this. So, a kid that would come up with this scheme, tell other kids to film it, has the lack of respect for his school and his coach etc. is probably fortunate to even be on a team. Nothing he did makes me say "good for him"...more like "another example of a kid who can't deal with a little adversity, likely because his room is full of participation medals and has parents that can't distinguish between sports and real life".

I'll wager this kid doesn't become a Marine or even an asst manager at a taco stand...if you can't deal with splitting time with a kid with better stats then the rest of life is going to be a kick in the ***.

Is this the kind of kid we need to put on psycho mass murderer watch? He seems to have just enough of the crazy, and mindset to be capable of shooting up a school, and if we want to be serious about preventing that ****, we need to find the crazies before they get violent.

I was serious. EVERY time some crazy person shoots something up we say "why didn't someone say something about this crazy person living among them before they cracked? Why did they wait until after the person did something terrible?" All I'm asking is, do people think that this kid has issues that he should be given help for, or is it as simple as teenagers do stupid ****, because they're teenagers? I really don't think there is anything wrong with asking that question. We should be asking it a helluva lot more often. If you don't see that, you're clueless.
