Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

IF the Gophers can solve the inconsistency issue they may do well enough for home ice in the playoffs. An NCAA berth is more remote. Based on what we saw against UMD, Mich. and CC the potential is there to beat some good teams. I have a feeling we'll see some good wins against tough teams in the 2nd half. Whether it will be enough for a postseason run remains to be seen.

Getting an NCAA berth is already almost an impossibility unless a lot of things start to happen/change. I refuse to consider home ice a goal.

I don't care if we get to the NCAA's this year.;) IMO, it is more important to play consistently better, everything else will take care of its self.

That is probably the right atitude to have. I wish I could get myself there.

If it works out, I like their chances on home ice than on the road for a shot at the F5. Of course that's assuming that they can prove that home ice is indeed an advantage since their home ice record stinks so far (5-6-3).

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

and, I assuming that hakstool chokes again worse than the Candian WJC team in the NCAA's, so maybe were even.

Choke Definition - "lose nerve and falter: to lose nerve or confidence and falter in the middle of saying or doing something ( informal )"

Nice of you to compare UND to a team Canada WJC team. Yes there are similarities in that both teams do tend to have confidence.

Something that the gophers seem to lack this season.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

The Gophers had a goalfest vs. U.S. U-18 tonight scoring 9 goals and Patterson recorded the shutout for a 9-0 win. Mariucci was about half full. Hoeffel and Cepis both had 2 goals. Lucia left it up to Bjugstad and Haula if they wanted to play after returning from the WJC. Haula decided to rest up for next weekend, but Bjugstad dressed and was 1-3-4 with a +4. Barriball scored his team leading 12th goal of the season. Next up....off to GF and the slugfest with UND!!!

I thought Kremer played a period and a half? Kangas is still out.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

I think the Sioux have choked at the FF a time or two (they've usually just been beaten by better teams). That said, better to lose there than languish all year in the scrapheap and watch the tourney from your dorm room.

If the Gophers can get there this year, they can certainly be dangerous. Lot of hockey left for a run.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Can't stand to see such a lack of enthusiasm that this thread was on page 3! It is tough to take. A good weekend showing would be good medicine, not that I expect it against a solid Sioux team.

I though I read a day or two ago that Kangas would give it a try again early this week, and if things hadn't improved, he might opt for surgery and be out the rest of the year. Any final word yet? I expect this season to continue on its path downward and have him out. Reminds me of the Vikings season. Hope Mariucci doesn't collapse. (I need a win this weekend to cure my case of the "Scoobies".)

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Kangas pulled himself from practice after about 10 minutes earlier in the week. Going to get the hip reevaluated. May require surgery.

Hip surgery! :(

If he wanted to avoid the Sioux series couldn't he have just got Mono or something?

But on a more serious note, College Hockey News is now speculating in a blog that the injury may (EDIT) end his college career . http://blog.collegehockeynews.com/2011/01/kangas-gopher-career-in-jeopardy

Jake Kremer assumes the No. 2 hole behind Patterson. Kremer, a junior from Eden Prairie, Minn., has never played in game that counts.
More importantly, with only two healthy goaltenders, the Gophers may be forced to significantly adjust their practice schedule. Most schools carry a third goaltender just for practice purposes. This injury may force Minnesota to get creative in that quest — by either shortening practices for their goaltenders, giving Patterson days off, or by recruiting a goaltender off the school’s club team — which other teams have done in the past.

Hopefully the surgery is a positive step towards a full recovery for Kangas.

When will untested Jake Kremer see more playing time?
Is a new #3 goalie joining the team soon?

His college career with the Gophers may be over with the season-ending surgery for the senior, but other articles have indicated that he plans on a pro career next season, once the torn labrum has been repaired and healed.

Wish him the best.

As much as I dislike the goofs and the fact that I have gone hoarse yelling Kangas's name at the Ralph, you never want to see a college athlete go out like this. Here's hoping to a speedy recover and good luck to you at the next level!
