Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Thanks kdilks for the explanation, and you're right on the total scheduled games, not just the first half as I stated. The interesting twist is the ruling states the injury must take place in the first half and there was no announcement in the first half that I'm aware of that Kangas was out for the season due to the injury. In Kangas' case, if he is eligible and he chose to return next season, the coaches would have to present valid medical documentation to the NCAA indicating he was unable to return to full participation in the season before the end of the first half. I suppose the trainers could come up with something if they needed to.

Roman in the Strib states that "they can't play past the midpoint of the season" which seems too vague according to the official NCAA ruling which seems to indicate in greater detail that the season ending injury must occur in the first half:

Like I said, they've only played 21 non-exhibition games out of a 43+ possible games, so we're still in the "first half" of the season.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Dear Ryan Cardinal,

I listened to you on my way into work today. Since, you are young the biggest rivalry to older fans is the Wisconsin series and closely behind the UND series. Nothing else, nothing more.

After watching last nights game, I'd say that the intensity on both teams compared to what was displayed in the WIS series would indicate that UND is the bigger rival for the players as well. Obviously younger players will base their perception on recent years results, but it is hard, no matter how long you've been a fan, to not get more excited for a rival you know the players will be most up to play.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Will you still be saying that in five years when there is a BTHC?

You think we aren't going to play UND because we're in the BTHC? I'd say at least two games a season. Good chance at four.

Without any hardware on the line and the Gophers virually never traveling to Grand Forks I would say the rivalry will sadly diminish. The Gophers will never play UND more than two times a year.

Disagree. boosters will absolutely require it. There is no doubt in my mind.

It's a moneymaker. So I would bet on 4 games a year. Plus, it'd be an OOC series, which would help the PWR.

The thing is, if UND is still playing 28 conference games a season, playing the Gophers 4 times would eat up 1/2 to 2/3s of our OOC games. If we schedule Wisconsin, well, now we have 0 games left for OOC...i don't see the Sioux wanting to do that. I think 2 games a year is more likely, whether it's a home/home series each year, or they alternate series each year or they play at a "neutral" location every year.

Now, if UND is playing less than 28 conference games (or if the NCAA allows more games/year) then 4 times a year would make more sense.

Money maker, yes, but sioux will still be in a ten team conference and I doubt they will play 2 ooc series against one team, gophers or not. I see one rotating series a year. I think a 6 team btc isn't going to be all it's cracked up to be. That's a lot of non conference schedule to fill.

Guess we were thinking the same thing at the same time.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

IMO the Sioux Gopher rivalry won't diminish even if there is BTHC (puke) I think there is enough hate ;) to last a lifetime between these two teams.

I should be more clear. The booster will only care if UND comes to MPLS. They don't care if they see any games in Grand Forks.

And you think that UND will be so desperate to play the gophers that they will agree to playing on the road every series?

I think the best solution for this rivalry to continue is something similar to the GLI/Showcase/Beanpot. Have Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin as "hosts" and either find a 4th permanent host or invite a fourth team each year. Host it at the X, sell it as a package, and split the proceeds 4 ways. It will ensure the rivalry will continue (also UND-Wisco rivalry) and all sides can make some money. If they wanted the schools could still schedule a home/away series say every other year.

Good idea. That would be great to see and most years could rival the Frozen Four as far as talent goes.

Nope. That is why the rivalry will sadly float away. I see the Gophers rotating UND, with DU and CC every third year.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Did Kangas buy his Kool-Aid from James Jones? Embarrassing...

Re: Minnesota Gophers Season Thread: Kangas Kool-Aid For All!

Kangas is done playing as a Gopher.

Not only that, but one goal was basically given to UND by a lapse in our D.

So, 3 goals, on the road, against the #2 team in the country? That's not bad. Not bad at all.

Who would be the 4th team? And would it be played tournament style like the GLI, or would it be an alternate opponent situation where MN and UW swap opponents on the second day regardless of results? If it's at the X, of course there'd be a "MN gets the night game" rule. :p

tUMD, probably. Maybe SCSU?

I'd vote for tourney-style, I hate the Key Party format.
