Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Well if I have it right, that's over 10 years ago. The Gophers have won 4 titles since then.

Having the opportunity to honor the men's team is part of the corporation's 50-year plan.

One of them was 15 years ago. The Twins marketing dept. and front office are clearly using UND as a marketing tool to attract ND fans. But such a move does involve some risk as many Twins fans are also Gopher fans who may greet UND with a cascade of boos. The fact that Twins president St. Peter is a UND Alum introduces a questionable bias into the saga as well.

Those boos would be coming from people at the game, yes? That's money in the Twins' pocket and they get to add a bunch of UND fans to the gate as well. Sounds like good marketing.

Is anyone not going to go to the game because the UND hockey team gets a couple minutes of recognition before a game?

If fans do boo, anyone with a pulse understands they most likely didn't buy a ticket because of UND. This season there's more than one reason for Twins fans to pile on the criticism. I can see fans making the bias connection with St. Peter as well, since a pre-St. Peter management wouldn't have even considered this in 2000. There are a lot of disgruntled Gopher/Twins fans and this gives them another reason to cast criticism at one of the most poorly managed MLB teams in recent memory.

I'm saying that those fans that boo bought tickets and are still at the game. Clearly having UND there didn't ruin it for them.

Fans are going to complain regardless, especially if a team sucks. If the Twins and Gophers weren't ****ting the bed, nobody would have an issue with it. But because both the Twins suck and Gopher hockey underwhelmed, lots of people are upset.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

This really is a bigger deal than I first thought. Gopher fans were already grinding their teeth at night at the thought of UND winning another banner and putting them even farther into the rear view mirror than they already were. Then, to publicly honor UND's championship in the home of the only professional Minnesota franchise in recent memory to win a championship of their own?

I feel so callous and self-centered to have not seen this earlier. I would volunteer for a crisis hotline right this minute if I knew where to call. People think that just because gopher fans are crude and slow-witted they do not feel hurt just like the rest of us, but that's probably not true.

I wouldn't pay more than $5 to see the Twins in the first place, so I probably wouldn't pay money to see this BS. ;)

That being said, it's marketing. If it was one-sided, which it doesn't seem to be, then maybe I might entertain a conspiracy theory...wait, no, I wouldn't. That's asinine.

Hell, if it meant selling more seats, the Twins would have a 7th inning stretch ceremony honoring Norm Green. (he sucks, btw)

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

The Minnesota Twins fan constituency is Minnesotans, plain and simple. The majority of the fanbase, sponsorship and supporting revenue over the years has always originated from the state of Minnesota. Since Target field opened in 2010, St. Peter's incompetence has resulted in the worst team in MLB and Minnesota fans are fed up.

Historically, has there ever been a non-Minnesota sports team of any kind honored at a Twins game? And next in line is North Dakota State football?:D St. Peter's UND bias under the guise of a marketing tool is a pure act of desperation. Since 2010 attendance has dropped an avg of 10,000 fans per game. I'm sure a majority of the fans on Sunday couldn't care less about UND hockey. I imagine more than a few fans will turn to their neighbor and ask, "why are we doing this?"

For Gopher/Twins fans it only adds fuel to the fire of a crappy Twins team simply because it's a rivalry...that's all. I think it's great that technology has given fans outside the state the opportunity of joining in a tradition that clearly rooted in much of Minnesota's history. But the Minnesota Twins will always belong to Minnesotans despite whatever this clown act St. Peter dreams up.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Many border fans in SD/ND are Twins fans. Believe it or not.

That somewhat surprises me, I won't lie. It makes sense, but they DO have their "own" team.

SteveO, as usual, is knee deep in hornblowing and propaganda.

Not that surprising when the Twin Cities is closer than Milwaukee for a decent portion of the area.

I was thinking bigger picture, in that Wisconsinites are loyal to WI only, but obviously many MNs commute from Hudson, Superior, etc.

As usual?:D I'm a long time Twins fan from way back. But you gotta read between the lines with St. Peter. He's ruined this team.

It is kind of funny.

I suppose the Twins could just put the Lynx and Minnesota gophers women's hockey team on perma status for throwing out the first pitch as the Twins wait for the Minnesota men's hockey team, football team, or any other team for that matter to actually win a championship. Unfortunately, at that pace, Maya Moore and Amanda Kessel will end up pitching more innings this season than any Twins pitcher.

Re: Minnesota Gophers Off Season thread - 2016

Western WI too.

Not that surprising when the Twin Cities is closer than Milwaukee for a decent portion of the area.
Correct, and there's a little more.

Once had a conversation with a friend from Eau Claire on this topic. He pointed to a time in the 1960's when WI didn't have MLB. The Milwaukee Braves departed in 1965; the Milwaukee Brewers first played in 1970.

Anyhow, his comment was that a certain number of baseball fans from Western WI adopted the Twins at that point in time. Many, along with their subsequent families, stuck with it. Today they're obviously a minority. But it's more than a small handful of fans.

The 1960's were a long time ago. Still, it makes sense. The Twins were very good at that time, winning the AL in '65; finishing 2nd in '67; and winning the new AL West in '69 and '70. Decent run; certainly enough to create a bond among those following the team.

One more tidbit. The same friend and his wife refer to MSP as "the Cities," just as people from Greater Minnesota do. As you say, MSP is a lot closer than MIL for them. So for some purposes, they're part of the MSP market.
