Minnesota Gophers 2021-2022

Jungels to Wisconsin on Insta tonight...Vivian. Many in MN think she is the frontrunner for Ms Hockey and the best 2022 D in the state.

Was the D situation going to be complicated next season?

No...

What is uncomplicated is that her sister, currently on the roster, sits and basically never sees the ice. Can't imagine that makes for good feelings from the family. Pair that with the UM's decline for the last five years or so and it makes sense to see recruits like Enright and Jungels flipping.

The recruiting mistakes are beggining to pile up for this program. Somethings gotta change.

Unfortunately we're seeing more flipping today than ever before. It's actually gotten much, much worse on the men's side.
And I looked up the Gophers' record over the past 5 years. Including this year's 11-3 and last season's shortened Covid schedule, their overall is 105-34-8, certainly not "the sky is falling" territory, and one that nearly every other program in the country would love to have.

To be fair, it isn't like the two sisters are on the same talent level, any more than Josie and Jessica Dunne were for OSU or the two Fillier sisters at Princeton. Is UW going to be giving Tella ice time? I don't see it. Covid impact and the "extra" year is going to back up players on many programs and there will be a lot of people who will be unhappy due to lack of ice time (or scholarship money).

If Vivian has her reasons for wanting to go to Madison, so be it. There will still be kids from the state who want to be here. We need the next Amanda Kessel who is willing to go to a program that isn't currently winning and wants to be the reason that it does win.

I wonder how Wisconsin always has scholarship money sitting around for these late adds. Or maybe they take less to go there.

WI did only have 5 D signed up for next year, so Jungels would make 6, though Buchbinder had indicated she was coming back, plus LaMantia could come back as she is a true Sr this year. Watts I don't know is how the covid extra years affect scholarship money. They can't force a school to fund extra scholarships, could they?

No word yet as far as I have heard on Tella heading to Madison or leaving but it cant be super comfortable. I know that at least 1 unhappy Gopher is no longer on the scratch list or roster at all after starting the season with the team (heading 90 minutes south?). Tella was scratched this past weekend but I believe played the RIT weekend. I am sure that all if it is no fun for any of the parties involved...hope that they all can work it out so any kids impacted can have a good or better college experience.

For the Gophers this season Taylor Heise has been playing lights out, especially lately. Like your LaMantia she's a true senior, and to the best of knowledge would be eligible to play another year due to Covid? (not 100% on this). But if so she would be joining Grace Zumwinkle and Abbey Murphy, who are being centralized and playing very well for the USA in their series with Canada. Getting a little ahead of myself, but I sure would love to see those three make up the Gophers' 1st line next season.

No. They aren't required to give any scholarships at all. Some programs have had D-I programs but didn't give any athletic scholarships (beyond the obvious Ivy League schools), and others didn't give the full allotment of 18, either when first phasing in a program or even years later.

As for the unhappiness, as soon there was Covid, there wasn't going to be a way to make it fair to everyone. The 2020 kids lost their NCAA Tournament. In trying to make it up to those who had a tarnished 2020-21, or none at all, they pushed the problem down to the players who were still in HS. There are only so many roster spots, and even more, only so much ice time. I'm not blaming anyone or decisions made, but Covid created an undesirable situation in so many ways.

You can bring up the Gophers record in the last five years and on paper it looks good but...

Not good against OSU and Wisconsin in particular. If Minnesota followers are satisfied with being 3rd or 4th best in the WCHA then so be it. I am not.

Of course the two Jungels sisters aren't on the same talent level which is why it was a recruiting mistake to bring in the older sister. #19 can skate well enough but is just not strong enough to handle the physical side of college hockey. Plenty of others who could have been recruited instead that are contributing elsewhere.

Shearen (#7) posted on her instagram that she's headed to Mankato next semester.

I don’t believe so but they can change the amount promised to other 2022 commits as long as it was done before signing NLI’s...or change the amount promised to the 2023’s. Scholarships can be divided so maybe someone thought they were getting 100% and is now getting 50%. Just like what happened at OSU over the summer: Scholarship money taken away from 2022s and given to transfers & 5th years. As far as gopher commits flipping...these are players who committed in 8th grade, to the former assistant coaching staff. Things can change a lot in those few years, including assistant coaches. Maybe going to college that close to home just didn’t appeal to a 17 year old anymore.

I always forget the Ivy's don't do scholarships. It think someone posted previously that they offer discounts or financial assistance though. They really just should have played that 2020 tourney......

Or maybe they realize how unfashionable the uniform colors are. Haha. I used to be hard on players who changed schools, but I have come around to the idea that if I wanted to go to 4 different colleges in 4 years I could, so why can't a player do that?

The Gophers take on Mercyhurst in Nashville today. The streaming link on both team’s schedules takes u to Total Package Hockey (Twitch). Never heard of it, does anyone know if you have to create an account, etc or simply click on the game after hitting ‘watch’ on the team sites ?

I assume scholarship money is available because academic money exists too. When these program publish their GPAs, I get the sense a lot of the players are strong academically as well. And it would be reasonable for their parents to foot some of the bill. For what they pay to have
their kids in competitive hockey, paying a bit for an actual degree if it means their kid is at their preferred school is an option for many of these families. Getting a full ride is probably more about ego, or a nice to have, rather than a need to have.

When I watched nwhl on twitch I believe it was free and no account needed. Account was needed if you wanted to comment.

I didn’t see communication about price/account. Victory press reports it as “streaming on twitch” and they usually indicate free or paid. Good luck!

I got in the Colgate / BC game without signing in or paying anything. There was an announcer. Couldn’t cast to my TV.

Colgate takes a 1-0 lead over BC after one period of play. Their goal came on a penalty shot and their was some controversy as the Colgate skater fell down on the way in (something I've never seen before!) but the refs let her continue after she got up quickly.
Could have been a wider deficit for the Eagles, but their goaltender (Levi) was outstanding. Shots in the first were 17-9 Colgate.

Comments on the Smashville production quality:
Picture quality is mediocre - not full HD
Announcer is excellent
No scoreboard showing shot clock, time remaining in period, or penalties

Colgate continues to dominate but BC's goalie (Levy) again was outstanding, keeping her team in it - but still down 0-1. Based on what I've seen so far it appears the Raiders will advance to the title game and - hopefully - will be playing the Gophers. Then again the Eagles have a whole period to even things up, but they need to play better.
