Minnesota Gophers 2021-2022

I was concerned when I first heard the Gophers extended Frost, but when I found out it was for 3 seasons including this one, that seemed about right to me.

I don’t think the Gophers coaches have done a good job the last 5 years. But I am open to blaming the staff as much as Coach Frost alone. I considered him and Joel Johnson a team, and watching the forwards the last 5 years did not lead me to think at all highly of Bethany Brausen as a coach.

I have hopes that bringing in the new blood in Darwitz and Bobrowski, and my belief that Frost has remembered that winning is actually important, we may see a new and improved look about this team by the end of the season!

As a Gopher fan, I think the complaint was always that the talent of each year's team remained potential, rather than realized. Watching St. Thomas play Duluth, I was impressed that as outmatched as they were, they continued to skate and to battle. That is all we can ask of our student athletics, that they play 100% each time they are on the ice. Merging the individuals into a team that is greater than the parts -- that is where we can debate the merits of any particular coaching staff. I am hoping with you, KTDC, for a brilliant finish to the season.

Other than the Sinner's coach what coach out there wouldn't want the Minnesota job if Frost left? Best facilities in the country. Right in the heart of the best recruiting area in the country. Minnesota wouldn't be in serious trouble other than a short adjustment which, frankly, they are going through now anyway.

Yeah but those colors and that mascot..YIKES!...and having PJ Fleck in the same dept. as you are BIG negatives.

I agree with Lindsay: I think the opportunity to play for Mark Johnson is a bigger factor for the average UW recruit than playing for Brad Frost is for the average UM recruit. I understand that recruits say that they liked the Minnesota culture and that Frost/staff cared about them as people. But the next second, those same recruits will be saying that they attended games when they were little and grew up wanting to be Gophers.

Sarah Nurse said she had no idea about MJ's glorious past when he walked into her house. I think that says a lot about him as a recruiter (and Dan and Jackie). I'm pretty sure all coaches push their own culture as superior. I think MN does have an advantage with young ladies who grew up on rodent hockey - a huge advantage. Frosty just needs to pick the right ones as a lot of them end up in the EZAC.

The ones that go to the EZAC aren't the problem, as you face them maybe twice in their careers. The worst are the WCHA misses, where they get a minimum of four chances a year to prove to Frost that he picked the wrong kid.

Typically UW doesn't get too many Rodentsota players though. Right now WI has 4. Helgeson, a legacy player, Bowlby, Toft and Kotlowski. All D interestingly enough. All 4 play regularly. If I recall correctly, Helgeson and Toft were late committals to UW as in like the spring/summer before enrollment, so Frosty sure had a shot at those 2.

Gophers take a 3-1 lead on the Beavers after one. Potomak with two of the three goals. SOG are 25-4.

#5, #2 and #24 for Minnesota are trying their best to get BSU back in this game...

Still 3-1 Minnesota after 2 periods
As good as the Gophers played in the first period they were opposite bad in the second, which quite possibly was their worst of the season. It looked as if the two teams switched uniforms between periods as the Beavers completely turned their game around in a positive direction. We'll see if the Gophers can reverse their slide in the third. They start with 1:53 of power play time to work with.

On the PP Madeleine carries up the length of the ice, declines 5 chances to pass, hangs on to the puck until there is nothing to do but give it away.

Amazing!

And she is so talented, it is such a shame she throws so much of it away acting like she doesn’t have teammates.

Watched that happen and said to no one in particular...What...The...H,E,double hockey sticks. That is a play that should have gotten her a seat on the bench.

As D2D pointed out that was one heck of a first period and quite the switch in the second period. Overall I like the progress the forward lines have made. They really put out 3 very good lines and the first two lines have been playing well. I think #16 is finding a good balance of her individual play and getting the puck to #15 and #21. That line has been fun to see develop. Also liked that they gave Vetter a chance and after that unfortunate first goal, I thought she played well. She was really hung out to dry a couple of times and did pretty well with those situations only giving up that late 2nd goal on a bad line change.

All too often she carries the puck too long and runs out of options what to do. It's like she makes up her mind what she's going to do too early, and her plan becomes obvious to everyone in the building, including players on the other team.

I normally choose not to criticize individual Gopher players on a public forum like this, but in this case we do have a player that has the talent to be a much more effective D...if only she didn't try to do too much all by herself offensively. Move the puck quicker, and if the opening is there, get open for a return pass. Otherwise, focus on playing shut down D - and don't get caught up ice.
