Minnesota Gophers 2021-2022

900ish for 1 game according to the box score.

Interesting. I don’t know how big the rink is, how many fit in the lower bowl. but it looked pretty empty on tv. Maybe it was 900... I suspect that number and lots of others are inflated. Edit:
i saw game 2 not game 1 which you reference. Not a big deal, I’m just jealous of folks that have local college hockey to watch and dont go haha. Looking forward to seeing what a Wisco crowd looks like on tv. And jumping back to st Thomas, they play in a small rink I think so the Minnesota fans could fill that out nicely and make it a fun atmosphere. Would definitely be on my list if I lived in the area.

I think some people these days may have tix and still don't go to the games because of the virus.

Definitely the case at LaBahn, they were sold out the first series and it was maybe 70% full. But UW does seem to have a lot of ticket eaters even in good times unless it's the rodents.

The No. 5 Minnesota Gophers travel 1,000+ miles east to take on the undefeated No. 3 ranked Colgate Raiders. I see two evenly contested games, with each team coming away with a win.
Huge Pairwise standings at stake, with Colgate defending their No. 1 Ranking against No. 10 Minnesota, which obviously has a LOT to gain and which should provide plenty of motivation. These East vs. West matchups are always intriguing.

Predictions?

Gophers sweep!

Question...do the Gophers ever skate their 4th line, or do they solely run with 3?
The season where I remember the 4th line getting the most ice time was 2018-19 when the Pannek and the Pots were back after the Olympic year. Sometimes, Heise was on the 4th line, and they finished with a 4th of Boreen, Skaja, and Oden. At least they always worked hard. In the final, they barely got to play. Sigh.

Since they suited up 8 D and 10 F, there wasn't actually a 4th line to send out.

Edit: It was actually 11 F. I'm apparently locked into 18 skaters.

Frost Signed to Three-Year Extension
Can't argue with his record(s) and accomplishments. Super impressive!

https://gophersports.com/news/2021/10/26/womens-hockey-frost-signed-to-three-year-extension.aspx

I'm very surprised that his "current" contract was that close to running out, and that the extension is as short as it is. Maybe women's hockey and Minnesota is different, but my impression has been that if a coach doesn't have an ongoing "four years remaining", that signals to recruits that the coach trying to recruit them may not be there for their whole time at that school.

It would be interesting to see the "number of years remaining" for some of the other top women's hockey programs in the country.

If Frosty bolted for some reason UM would have been in serious trouble. I'm not sure where he would have gone, but you never know. How many years did he have left on the contract?

Other than the Sinner's coach what coach out there wouldn't want the Minnesota job if Frost left? Best facilities in the country. Right in the heart of the best recruiting area in the country. Minnesota wouldn't be in serious trouble other than a short adjustment which, frankly, they are going through now anyway.

all conjecture from me per usual but my thoughts:

Covid and the surprise and controversial exclusion from the tourney may have impacted timing of the signing. Perhaps the parties involved decided to wait and see what beginning of this season delivered before extending? Not that he wouldn’t be extended but maybe dollars impacted by beginning of this season? Interesting the signing or at least the announcement comes after they play the team they thought they were going to play last spring. Crowell signing should have reset the market this summer, hopefully he got paid. Whatever people think of the current state of the program (and for god sake, perspective Minnesota fans: 3rd in the country!) Frost is the 2nd most accomplished active head coach right?

as far as term, Minn is a school that has said there’s financial uncertainty due to Covid right? Maybe they prefer shorter than usual term as a result.

Agree with Five that it doesn’t matter from a recruiting standpoint what his term is. At some schools the coach is very much the program, not to discredit Frost but I think that’s less of an issue at Minn for the reasons listed. This is also true at Wisco, but in a head to head comparison When Johnson eventually retires at Wisco even though they also have the facilities etc, you are losing a bigger name and that transition will be more interesting than any theoretical head coaching change at Minnesota.

I agree with Lindsay: I think the opportunity to play for Mark Johnson is a bigger factor for the average UW recruit than playing for Brad Frost is for the average UM recruit. I understand that recruits say that they liked the Minnesota culture and that Frost/staff cared about them as people. But the next second, those same recruits will be saying that they attended games when they were little and grew up wanting to be Gophers.
