Minnesota Gophers 2021-2022

Maybe, but I think they are doing a better job of recruiting than the big sister campus.
I take it that you mean Bulldogs who have not yet arrived on campus? Of the current rosters, both teams are rather sparse on impact players beyond their senior classes.

I think that is one of the problems that Frost is having to try to solve. There are only so many scholarships available for next year. Potentially, Zum the Elder and Murphy could return. The large group of seniors who aren't super seniors could return. Where do you find scholarship money for all of these people? One for Murphy should have always been in the plan, but not for the rest. Do you shuffle $ around and risk losing future commits? Maybe that is part of why some kids bailed. IMO, it is impossible to keep everyone happy in the days of Covid, unless you have been getting by with a thin roster where you don't use all of your scholarships. UW had some kids transfer before this year. Don't know if they chose to leave or if they were told that things had changed and there was no longer a spot for them.

It's easy for us as fans. We can recommend recruiting everyone and giving scholarships to everyone. In the real world, more difficult choices need to be made. We don't always know who does/doesn't have interest in coming here. But I do know that when Minnesota HS kids don't get recruited by the Gophers, they tend to become motivated to prove the "U" staff wrong to a degree that is as great, and likely greater, than any other talent pool in the country. I don't think that the Toronto kids, for example, take it as personally if they aren't recruited by Clarkson, BU, Harvard, or wherever they hoped to go.

If I was a college kid right now, I'd be unhappy beyond hockey. Pay big bucks to take classes online and have practical applications like labs cancelled. Miss out on a lot of the social aspect of college, which taught me more useful lessons than all of my courses combined. No matter what the hockey coaches do or not, the experience is diminished.

I will concede that Frost has likely made mistakes, but I don't think that he has become some epic screwup overnight. By the same token, I doubt that he was making perfect decisions back when his team seemingly didn't lose. It's a different game when you have a Hannah Brandt (for one example) on your roster, versus when you don't.

But Hannah wasn't good enough for Katey Stone's Olympic team, remember. Sweet goal she scored against Harvard here at Ridder, I recall.

Yes...

Hemp, Huber, and Murphy are or should be impact players for Minnesota. Vivian Jungels should have been one coming in next year.

Look, you can rationalize it all you want about the circumstances. That just sounds like excuses to me, for a program that shouldn't be taking a back seat to anyone in the recruitment process

I'm opting out of following this team and getting on the bandwagon for St. Thomas if this staff turns this program into a UNH...

Much like the Yale Princeton comparison was off the other day.... Minn is a long way off from becoming a UNH . When was UNH last good? Minn won the NCAA championship in 2016? No need to go to the Tommies yet.

can anyone easily say what the reg season record is between Minn Wisc going back a few years?

The class of 2022 was tricky for many college coaches because it was the most affected by the recruiting rule change. There was a frenzy of recruiting activity when these players were in 8th grade/hs freshmen because coaches wanted to lock in the top players before the deadline. Looking back, there were players that Frost could be kicking himself that he didn’t recruit, and now they’re committed to UMD, OSU, Mankato, etc. Meanwhe some of his early recruits have decommitted. Hindsight is 20/20, but it seems like Minnesota lost on some early recruiting gambles. Only time will tell, though.

Funny, just after you post this, for the month of November Taylor Heise was named The WCHA Player of the Month and Peyton Hemp The WCHA Rookie of the Month. And as you may know Abbey Murphy was centralized with the USA National Team and would certainly be an impact player if she was playing college this season, as would Grace Zumwinkle.

Since the 2016/2017 season...

6-15-3

We had something like a 17 game unbeaten streak against Wisconsin before that. I thought that was the best of our streaks!

We are into the sixth straight season of the Badgers being better than the Gophers. No shame in losing for a while to Wisconsin. They are a great team and program. But, for me, this is becoming a problem.

I think Wisconsin has had some good luck lately:
- Pankowski motivation when she got released twice from the Centralized roster
- UND / Mercyhurst goalies delivering NCAA Championship performances for Wisco, bittersweet
- Watts motivation last year as a final push to make Team Canada ; her availability at all this year, the fact she even transferred there in the first place

Surely it won’t last forever and I think they’re lucky they got that 2019 championship as they were on a bit of a bad streak themselves by their standards.

Don’t forget the Princeton de-commit arriving mid-season last year

This is the goofiest of rivalries. For the first six seasons, Minnesota totally dominated. Then it switched with the departure of Wendell, Darwitz, Stephens, Wall, Horak and it was all Bucky for six years, even during the two years where UW wasn't as good as the Gophers were otherwise. Then it flipped back, the Gophers won the games and hoisted the banners. Now it is the Badgers turn again, and the Gophers don't even get a whiff of titles. I can't explain it, but there it is.

2019 was no luck at all, pure will to win baby!

Yeah, is MJ not a genius or Watts? Smileyface.

#5 for the Gophers is still driving me nuts. Other than that a pretty well played game for the Gophers. Heise, Skaja and Boreen were very good all game long.

Wisconsin demonstrates how hard it is to go undefeated. The team got in an early hole but played great and got themselves into a position where it appeared that they were back into a position where they could compete for the win. Then their goaltender gives it away. And Minnesota was good enough to hold on from there. A very good win for the Gophers.
