So how did Ohio State manage to commit a penalty before the opening pick drop?
Illegal equipment. Their black sweaters violate WCHA rules that require numbers to be of a contrasting color

Yes, they were sloppy at times, but they generated plenty of great chances, more than enough to win the game. But shooting the puck was a big problem! Yes, they hit metal (squarely) three times, but on a dozen more they just missed, barely wide of the net. And on a dozen more than that they shot it right into Brandii's breadbasket, with corners wide open. No doubt she played amazing, but with all their miss-fires Minnesota made her look even better than that. The Gophers will need to take much better advantage of their opportunities next weekend, because they are not likely to get nearly as many. This was a game you could look at in one of two ways. On the one hand, Minnesota outshot OSU by a large margin, and hit the pipe three times in a one goal loss. So, it was a game they could easily have won.
On the other hand, the passing was a sloppy reminder of last year. The power play looked comatose all weekend. And in general, the Gophers just weren't very sharp. They're going to have to play a lot better than this next weekend.
I thought about joking that those uniforms were so hideous they should be penalized, but the black on black numbers were my first guess what what the issue was. I don't know what is more surprising, that Ohio State didn't know that they were violating NCAA rules or that they only brought one jersey.
It was also surprising that there was a rent-a-band at the game. Hadn't seen that before at a regular season game.
As far as the actual game, it seems strange that they didn't even review the shot that caused someone to sound the goal horn in the 3rd period. I didn't think it went in, but it sure seemed close enough to take another look.
Looking forward to next weekend. It's a good October when you get to see games between two top 5 teams on 4 consecutive weeks.
(I'm feeling really good about my decision to purchase the annual subscription from FloHockey.)
How good is the video quality on the Flo?
So true. Also in some games you don't get any play-by-play audio, which in some cases can be a good thing. As with all of these streaming services, the quality of the video feed is based on the equipment at the location. Some schools have better equipment (and operators) than others.

But in general I've been pleased with the video quality. Compared to just a few years ago it's much improved as it's now almost exclusively broadcast in HD. But as DDad16 notes there are still varying degrees of what can loosely be defined as "HD". As you might expect this becomes most noticeable when you connect to a big screen TV.
Time to move on from the jersey talk to the upcoming big "Border Battle" series this coming weekend.
Interesting take on what to expect from Nicole Haase and Candace Horgan in this week's "Wednesday Women": https://www.uscho.com/2018/10/24/wednesday-women-6/
...starting with Nicole's observation...
Nicole: "I think you have to give the Badgers the advantage at home, just because they’ve been so successful at LaBahn. Both games are already sold out and will be the 18th and 19th straight sell out for the Badgers, who are riding a 35-game home unbeaten streak. As you said, the Gophers can’t be happy with having lost to their rivals five times last season, especially since Wisconsin ended their season."
The Gophers should have plenty of motivation to reverse the recent trend at LaBahn...I believe the talent is there to do it.
The Gophers appear to have the potential to be a great team. I haven't seen more than hints of greatness from them yet this year. They struggle to just be good at times. In recent years, the Badgers have been much quicker to find a consistent game at the start of the season, and they have the regular-season banners to prove it.UW is a great team, the rodents are a great team...

Goaltending isn't as feast or famine as it was last year but I think Scobee would like to have a mulligan on the Saturday OhioSS game.
Has anyone heard anything about Taylor Wente's availability for this weekend's games? It sure would be nice to have the Zumwinkle-Wente-Schammel line reunited.
