Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

Congratulations to freshman center Taylor Heise on being named the WCHA Forward of the Week:

and as long as we are there:

I guess I’m going to have to check out their twitter page more often, looks like they were practicing their shoot out maybe? at the end, apparently somebody scored
hopefully there will be no shootout this weekend

Thanks for the links...

Liked reading this about Heise.

"When she's not practicing on Minnesota's first power-play unit or completing other offensive drills, Heise is working on shot blocking and defensive zone coverage."

Not going all BADger fan on the bit as the Gophers don't have 4 1st lines like they do, but the Gophers have a pretty nice setup with the top two lines and some very competent depth behind that. ;)

Darn straight! We also have 4 starting goalies as well and 7 D that can be the first pair. Next week you will see the full fury of the swarming Badgers. I sure hope Clark is ready to go next week. I recall the last game they played with a lot of smothering fondness.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

From the article: "Minnesota's players have recorded 42 points this season. The "Pots and Pan" line is responsible for nearly one quarter of those points."
With all the talent this line has their slower-than-expected start is a little surprising, at least to me. But the good news, I think, is that lately they've really started to click.

I was thinking the same thing, maybe a case of “one pass too many”.

Given they likely logged more ice time, ¼ of the scoring is underperforming although I have to admit watching them put on a passing clinic against Mercyhurst was so much fun I looked for a tip bucket as I left, I was feeling guilty about paying so little to get in to see it.

Everybody mentions 19 “seeing the ice” but I can’t think of anybody I’d rather have shooting (‘cept maybe ZoomBoom)

The first two series they were a contrast to Wente’s line who seemed to keep it old school, move the puck out of the zone and hit one of your wings at full speed with a pass in the neutral zone who then skated in trying to put a shot on goal. In the first 4 games, other than a few times in one of the games at Duluth where ZoomBoom received the pass behind her, they were doing their own version of a passing clinic.

Speaking of Wente, I was surprised to see her a scratch Saturday, but the Freshies sure played well in her absence, guess I'll find out what that was all about tonight.

Williamson gets the empty netter for a 3-0 win.
Very physical game but be clean. Buckeyes started very strong and dominated the first 10 minutes. Then it was back and forth for the rest of the period.. early in the second the Gophers took over and just wore OSU down. At the first break SOG was 10-10. Final was 48-18 and it looked like it.
Braendli kept OSU in the game and sdeserved a star.

It was highly entertaining
Williamson also got the first goal. Skaja the second.

Nine minutes into the second, it was 12-12. Minnesota took over from there, though there were some dicey moments in the Gopher defensive end.

Add the distance of the first two goals together and you don't get outside the crease. Tianna Gunderson had her best game as a Gopher, and created a nice chance that popped straight up in the air off of Brändli's save and landed in the crease. Williamson pretty much just skated into the net and brought the puck with her.

On the second goal, no Buckeye picked up Zumwinkle coming off the bench. She got her own rebound off a shot and pushed it through Brändli from behind the net, and Skaja poked it home.

I thought Minnesota's effort was lacking in the first period, but they really picked it up from there.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

Minnesota rolled all four lines for most of the game and that to me was a huge difference maker. Starting about the middle of the 2nd period you could see the Buckeyes begin to tire, and it was the Gophers jumping on the loose pucks and winning the possession battles in all three zones. Ohio State is very talented but it was the Gophers' depth that won it in the end.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2018-2019

Still no Taylor Wente...Was that mentioned on the audio pregame broadcast?

Not that I heard. Dan was the only one that mentioned the roster, and he was just pointing out that Gunderson would be taking a regular shift and Smith was the extra skater. I don't remember seeing Smith on the ice, however. Dan was more concerned about not being able to read names or numbers on those Darth Vader uniforms, although it sounded like he faked it well during the actual play.
