Thanks. So I am guessing that FSN doesn't broadcast the regular broadcast online, just the Director's Cut? I might at least be able to catch this, although I'll be out West, and all those 6 pm starts don't help me....

That was fun last night.
A few thoughts on the game:
First, attendance! The listed attendance was around 7,800. I was guessing 7,500 when I was at the rink. There were more people at this exhibition game than there were at some of the conference games a couple seasons ago. I have a feeling Mariucci is going to be rocking this year...
As far as the players...
- Marshall looked good. At both ends.
- Isackson looked like he spent the entire off-season watching old Grant Potulny reel. His first 2 were just sticking his nose into it around the net, but his third was a good skill play.
- Skjei looked like he is ready to step right in. M Reilly looked a bit shaky in the first, but grew better as the night wore on. By the third, I was thoroughly impressed with him and would expect to see him getting significant playing time.
- Haula looks like he is quite a bit stronger, physically, than last year. I'm expecting big things from that kid.
- Holl looked like the same old Justin Holl that we have seen the past 2 years. He is going to need to really step it up if he wants to see ice time, in my opinion.
- Neither Shibrowski nor Wilcox were called upon that much. Shibrowski did make 1 stellar save in the first on a turnover behind the net that was centered right on the tape of a Lethbridge player at the bottom of the circles. That was the best save of the night for any of the goalies.
- #9 seemed like an apt # for R Reilly. He was the best of the freshman forwards, in my opinion.
Overall, it's always hard to glean very much from these exhibitions. But there was some really positive stuff last night. The Gophers came out flying and hitting from the first puck drop. And I also liked that MN put up 7 goals without any of their "big guns" scoring.
That was fun last night.

I was surprised to see Isackson up on the first line with Bjugs and Rau for a good portion of the game, and it certainly payed off for him. Lucia obviously saw a lot of improvement in Chris to put him up on that line. Should be interesting to see how the lines shake out for the opening of the regular season against MSU this weekend.
I liked the balanced scoring on the lines:
Rau/Bjugstad (1 assist)/Isackson (3 goals) = 4 points
Warning (goal)/Haula (2 assists)/Budish (1 assist) = 4 points
Condon (1 assist)/Boyd (2 assist)/Ambroz (1 goal, 1 assist) = 5 points
Serratore/Michealson/Larson (R. Reilly, Horn) (no points, but lots of hustle and puck battles won from this checking line)
Hard to see anything changing much with these lines. They look very balanced...for now.

Someone made the pt that M Reilly had a slow a slow sart and picked it up as the game progressed. I spose this is true.
Based on what I saw last night, he'll be the freshman to have an impact on the ice in short order. I do think you've got to find a way to play him and Skjei.
I think moving Marshall up would actually be a mistake. I think you've got to find a way to make it a priority to keep him and the frosh in there. Even if you have to cycle through some of the veterans. Ben's not the guy to develop cause he's there...he just needs consistency to take him the last step.
I'm not sure about Isackson being on the first line. I'm just wondering if he's 'the best of the rest'. Obviously he got the goals. But I wouldn't say his talent earned them. And that was with an arguably soft first 10 minutes by the Gophs when I noticed that the SOG were 4 to 4.

Well, the first 5 minutes when MN killed a minor penalty. That PK looked rusty and Lethbridge got a number of shots on it.
By the time the first minute of the Gopher major PP had gone by, Minnesota had taken a legitimate lead in shots.

They do, but you have to look at the teams that are playing.
For example, Minnesota is one of the best college hockey teams (or at the very least should be), while Lethbridge is an awful Canada West team (2nd worst in the league). It is of no surprise then that they were clobbered by Minnesota, and beaten just as soundly by Mankato.
Likewise, Manitoba was the best team in Canada West last season, and gave North Dakota (another team that should be very strong this season) a very good game (UND won 5-3). The next night Manitoba drew with Bemidji State.
British Columbia is another decent team. They drew with DU 2-2, before losing to CC 3-1 the following night.
Looking at the scoreboard from this past weekend, Canadian teams won several contests:
Ottawa beat Canisius 5-2
Carleton beat Clarkson 6-2
St Francis Xavier beat Northeastern 4-3
Acadia beat Quinnipiac 2-0
St. Thomas beat Sacred Heart 4-3
Additionally, there were a few other ties.
As for the obvious discrepancy in talent between Minnesota and Lethbridge, the answer is pretty simple: Minnesota is a very good team, and Lethbridge is a very poor team. Had Minnesota played a stronger Canadian team like Manitoba or British Columbia, the ultimate result would have almost assuredly been the same (Gopher Win), but my guess is that the score would have been significantly closer.

If the games were switched and the Gophers got to play Lethbridge the night after they played Minnesota State, the Maverick game would have been closer, and the Gophers would have put up double digits in goals. Lethbridge plays UNO tonight to finish out their back-to-back-to-back so UNO might really put a beating on them.

If UMTC played Lethbridge Sunday or Monday the game would have been run time and Haula would have been in net. Lethbridge could'nt have come into an olympic arena and kept up with the goofs on day 2 or 3 of 3 with travel and hoped to remain competitive for more than 20 minutes, I think that's a little closer to reality. Also, since when is GoldwingMC the pessimist of your fanbase?!

I also think Mankato is going to be an improved team this year. Very much like Tech last year. A new coach who will have a positive impact. A cupboard not left completely empty. Mankato will surprise some teams this year.
