I'm with you. In fact I think Parenteau should only be behind Alt and Schmidt as far as playing time goes.

As for moving Holl to forward, he's never played at least not since before HS and all he needs is to get his confidence back. Anyone that watched him in h.s. saw a sound positional defensive player and someone that created offense - both by shooting and by passing. He very well could be moved to F because he has offensive skills and can skate, but I'm not ready to buy into his defensive demise just yet.

What alternate universe have I entered where Scooby is being accused of being overly optimistic???

And why not have a couple D split D and forward duties, like Marshall and Reilly/Marshall and Holl, etc.? They could play D one night and F the other, and see who does the best at each.

I don't know if this was just a list, but if this is a ranking, I can't say I agree. Alt is good, but Schmidt was possibly in the top three in WCHA last year, and in the link earlier, they have him listed as projected 4th in country this year. I like Alt, but some people on here seem to see more in him than I do. Don't get me wrong, I think he has a ton of potential, and shows it at times, but he was not a stellar player last year.

Yeah I like Alt in the number 1 spot, Schmidt right there along with him at 1a. But that's me...

I'd like to see MG go with the maturity and experience of basically the same D pairings as last season (#1 defense in the WCHA last season, 12th overall). If it's not broken don't fix it, just tweek it a bit.

Seth Helgeson/Justin Holl
Ben Marshall/Mark Alt
Jake Parenteau/Nate Schmidt

and then shuttle in Thompson, Skjei and Reilly for limited playing time. Thompson finally showed some progress last season after getting into penalty trouble with six penalties in his first three games for 23 minutes. Marshall was out of the lineup because of an injury at one point late last season, and Thompson took his slot. Thompson's line: no SOGs, +1 and no penalties in his fourth game as a Gopher (5 GP total).

Blake Thompson did a nice job," Lucia said. "I thought all the D were sharp tonight as far as playing with new partners and mixing and matching. Mike did a great job with that. Blake was steady. He was physical and he made good decisions with the puck all night long. We kept their shots down and kept a lot of it to the outside.

It sounds like MG and Lucia are really high on the freshman D, so Thompson might be passed up on ice time.

I would agree with this. If Alt was the second best in the country in his style of play last year then maybe he's as good as all that. Schmidt was the second leading scoring d man in the country. People like solid players...but a goal in our favor carries a lot of weight in my book.

Its tough sitting two of the top frosh in the country. I agree with the Don on finding a way to get the best on the ice and keep kids happy for a year.

I think you've got to be a bit careful with Marshall. IMO he's the odds on favorite for the heir apparent for Schmidt and top pp quarterback. Have to get him there for next year.

I also think that Alt has more of the offensive intuitiveness that Schmidt has, but Nate is great too. For that reason they must be split on even strength situations. You have to have a guy that can bail the Pincher out when he effs up.

No way do you sit two recruits like Reilly or Skjei (unless they consistently prove they can't handle things in the first month or two). Too much skill and too much upside.

Alt, Schmidt, and Helgeson are the only ones I feel are locks out of the vets on D. Marshall and Holl would seem to be the best candidates to slide up to forward from defense. No doubt that Thompson is at the bottom of the depth chart.

Are you saying you think Alt has more "offensive intuitiveness" THAN Schmidt does? (Sentence wasn't quite clear to me.) If so, what is this based on? Schmidt had a pile of points. Yeah, he was on the PP. But that is because the coaches thought he was the best person for that position. I assume they are good judges of that. MG is quoted in the article as saying Schmidt is the number one D on the team. To my eyes, Alt was not at the same level as Schmidt last year. Alt would still have to make a big jump and Schmidt would have to not improve for them to be even.

Once again though, can't say it enough that arguing about how to pick who will be left out versus who can play is a good problem to have. And I still think we will see more experimenting than most people say. I don't think there are 4 set in stone D and the others vying for the last spots. Or one D who plays the whole year at forward. I think it will be fluid with maybe a couple D getting chances to play forward at times, at least in the beginning of the year. I don't think you necessarily want to fore go an entire year of developing any one of the D's either.

The Gophers looked very good against a crappy team but there is still positives from the game.

They scored 7 goals and Bjugs Rau Budish or Haula did not score, they got lots of secondary scoring which bodes well for this grind of a season.

Isackson got a hat trick playing with Bjugs and Rau and that line looked good.

Budish Warning and Haula were very solid, Ambroz was all over the place as was Boyd on Condon and Ambroz's line

Ryan Reilly is very small but fast, he was a water bug playing with Serratore and Larsen and Michaelson mixed in.

Skjei looked very poised on D for a Frosh, they put him in alot and he looked the part.
