“@Russostrib: #gophers coach Don Lucia says option w 9 D is to redshirt somebody before Saturday, play seven D or play a D up front”

Wonder what they do? Red shirt Riley or Skjei? Play Marshall at forward? Thoughts?.

At least they seem accepting about their lack of class. Not exactly something to be a mark of pride, but whatever helps get you through the season

Let's just say UND were to acquiesce to being classless as fans and a hockey team? Then what, program cancelled? Someone going to come to our homes and ridicule us? It just seems to be such a big deal to gopher fans and after seeing them puke in REA, the bars, and on the buses i'd like to know where this "line" begins and ends.

my thoughts would be zero chance skjei is redshirted. i would guess the only 1 that would red shirt would maybe be marshall, but having played a full season competently, i think its more likely they move someone to forward (probably him). connor reilly going down for the year probably makes the decision that much easier to move someone to forward

Here is the line

classy to the East, classless to the West. Simple, really.

Going to be overseas for the next few weeks. Anyone know where I can listen to the games online? GopherSports.com?

I've traveled quite a bit overseas and yeah if you've got an internet connection...there's the good old $9.95 for Gopher All Access with Wally and Frank. Where ya goin'?

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

Thanks man. Going to Italy and Switzerland. Pretty excited.

Cool...been there and you'll love it. If you can get anywhere around Berner Oberland, Switzerland (The heart of the Bernese Alps) it's well worth the effort, especially if you're a skier. One of the most beautiful places on earth. Have a good trip man and Go Gophers!:)

Thanks man. Wrote that down. Appreciate the tip! Hopefully we're undefeated when I return :)

I would be really surprised if they red shirted Reilly or Skjei, it will be interesting to see what Lucia has planned though.

I vote for playing a D at forward. Has anyone watched them practice and see if they had a D playing up front or not?

I don't remember if it was here or on GPL, but someone rumored that it might be Holl that moves up to F instead of Marshall. What would people think of that? I know a ton of people hate on Holl defensively and I think he used to play F in high school if I'm not mistaken...?

I'd be fine with that.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

I'd be fine with Holl moving to forward as well.

It's been a few years since we had everyone stay in the off-season, these are nice problems to have.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

Me too. He is a bit of a liability defensively(although not as bad as some people made him out to be) and he doesn't really score enough to make up for that. Maybe a change of scenery in switching to F would be good for Holl. Purely speculation, but with the depth on the D corp, moving either Holl or Marshall would make sense if you don't want to redshirt anyone.

Also, a name I haven't heard mentioned much throughout the summer is Alt. I expect big things this year. I thought he was pretty solid defensively and he more than doubled his point total from his freshman to sophomore season. If he could just replicate that, I'd be very pleased. If his offensive numbers get any better, look out.

I agree. I know the Gophers are coming out preseason number one, number two, whatever but in many ways I think they're being "overlooked". I think the drubbing they took at the hands of BC in the Final Four gave some folks a little bit of a dismissive attitude to how much talent this teams has, and how much experienced talent they have. I hope they are able to take full advantage of it. Holl moving to forward makes a lot of sense because he wasn't likely to get much time back on the blueline. It's just a completely different team now. The few years before last year there was nothing but open playing time for almost any live body. Now there's not and that makes a huge difference.

I don't think being "overlooked" is necessarily a bad thing. Typically most Minnesota teams do well, build expectations and get the bandwagon rolling before laying a massive egg. Gopher football team is a recent example. But this team seems to buck that trend sometimes. Still, if you're looked at as the very best, the only way you can go is down and that's always a hard fall.

This. Couldn't have said it any better.

Re: Minnesota Gophers 2012-2013: From Dinkytown to Steel City!

Nearly every prognostication I've seen by category has the Gophers as a national #1 or 2, an NCAA #1 seed, winning the WCHA, votes for player of the year, Hobey, rookie WCHA player of the year, etc., etc. Exactly how have they been overlooked? Just because some fans haven't come out and said OMGTEHGOFRZRTEHGRTSTEVAH doesn't mean they've been overlooked. Either way fans shouldn't care because they still have to prove it out on the ice.

As for moving Holl to forward, he's never played at least not since before HS and all he needs is to get his confidence back. Anyone that watched him in h.s. saw a sound positional defensive player and someone that created offense - both by shooting and by passing. He very well could be moved to F because he has offensive skills and can skate, but I'm not ready to buy into his defensive demise just yet.

Nor am I. Just posting something I heard and wanting to hear what others thought of that idea.

It was just an observation. And I think you know me well enough to know I don't care. Everyone accuses me of being too negative and they I say something positive and I get this. I guess I can't win.

Holl doesn't have time to get his confidence back if he wants to play defense this season.
