Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

Agreed. Friday the Gophers looked sketchy, although Saturday they looked much better (but still somehow escaped). More missed opportunities on Sat by both teams from what I saw, although the Techies seemed to notice MTU mail it in more towards the end of each game.

I know shots don't always tell the whole story, but didn't UM outshoot MTU 40-25 on Friday?

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

I have a slightly different take. I see it as going undefeaated in the next 4 (meaning a tie in there would be acceptable) and then at LEAST a split against UND to follow that (I'm tempted to say they have to take 3pts from UND, but that will be a very tough feat). If they can do all that, go undefeated in non-conference followed by at least a split with UND, I will be ready to say this team is back on track to be in contention come the end of the season....assuming they don't **** down their legs at some later point.

I think they need all 4 and at least 3 in the revenge series. Then they'll be on their way. A tie in the next 4, and a split with UND at home would be just treading water and basically the same as what they've done in the first half.

IMO.

Sounds right, but honestly, MN didn't look like they came to play, until after the first period, and even then...

Let's put it this way: I had a "Kill Me Now" sign over my head after MTU took a 2 goal lead. Literally.

Realistically, based upon the fact that time and time again this group has shown very little continuity and are 3-6-0 at home, it seems projecting a 4 game sweep and 3 pts. in the UND series denotes a bit of polished hyperbole. I think a couple ties or a loss in the mix is a reasonable assessment.:)

Brent, do you think there might be a chance that you're taking this sport too seriously?;)

I'm not projecting anything. I'm outlining what they need to do to:

A. Get Home Ice (a ridiculous goal for Gopher Hockey Team, it should be implied)
B. Get an NCAA berth.

If they get a couple of ties or a loss in the mix you can just about kiss an NCAA berth goodbye.

Yeah, I know it's what they need to do and I respect that, but my point was to shine a little realism on the picture. I've been hopeful for a turn around all season and they seem to always find a way to underachieve or are the recipient of a plethora of bad bounces. I'm at a point now where things seem to unpredictable with this group. Until they can show consistency, heart and put a string of solid wins together against good teams, they're unpredictable. IF by chance they can eek out an NCAA berth, IMO they will not go deep.

How about a little optimism?

Maybe Lucia will bring a "D" guy in. Cepis is coming in. Jordan is going away for a while, maybe that's what he needs. Goaltending has been solid all year. Patrick White and Hansen have both shown a weird ability to do something they couldn't do before and find the twine.

6 wins in a row against bad competition and a revenge series is the current stretch. No better time then the present. Remember, they NEVER (even when they're good) sweep AT Tech.

Go Gophers.

Hey I like that optimistic spirit Scooby! I'm not totally giving up, I'm tentative at this point with this group. I don't expect Cepis to make a huge contribution after a year off. If he does light the lamp a few times I'll be the first to shout "YES!". White and Hansen have shown some spark lately but the same thing happened to Lucia early and he hasn't done squat since. This team is so inconsistent though, it's hard for a fan to get their hopes up too high.

But I agree with you that this is the time in the schedule to step up and I'm all for it. UND is 2-5-2 in their last nine, have key injury issues and have had some scoring problems as of late so the Gophers appear to have slight advantage but their home record sucks. If they get that right, and play consistent there's a chance for a decent season.

EDIT:

I'm not about to validate this team based upon a sweep of a team that has only won 3 out of their last 16 games.

WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT DID YOU DO WITH SCOOBS?

Actually, I am on board with you. Harley is correct in stating you can't expect 4 wins followed by 3 pts vs UND based on their play so far, but what you are talking about is what they NEED to do, and what is within reason to expect can happen. They are superior on paper to the opponents in the next 4 games, and even in performance (as opposed to on paper) are probably still better. So to expect another step in improvement isn't asking too much. And I have always expected UND not to be as good as many had projected, given their losses in the offseason. I expected them to be a few injured players away from being mediocre, and it looks like that is just where they are now. So while I don't expect 5 wins and a tie to UND, I also think they almost need this to get back to those goals you listed and I think it isn't that unreasonable to ask. If this happens, the confidence will start to return, and I would expect more consistency with more confidence. (The old, "one step at a time" approach.) If they can start to build up from there, they can still salvage a good season. But as has been mentioned before, there is very little room for error. A slip at the wrong time could cause it all to crash back down.

Re: Minnesota Golden Gophers 2009-2010: Calmly Step Away from the Ledge

IMO it's not unrealistic to think they can go 6-0 over the stretch we were talking about. They are 2-0 and have another 4 winnable games to go before the WCHA grind starts....... let's think positive Harley. :D

This is it. The season is on the line. A sweep against Harvard, and a couple of wins against the CCHA give them the non-conference record they need for the NCAA's.

UND is a BIG TIME revenge series. They deserved better on Sat. night there and that may have had a lot to do with the funk they got in. I think they can sweep UND here if they go 6-0 over this stretch.

If they do that that's 9 wins in a row and maybe just maybe things can be normal again.

Maybe I should rummage through my stack of old paperbacks for that beat up copy of The Power of Positive Thinking - by Norman Vincent Peale.;)

Amazingly the Harvard program has crashed and burned this first half. They're winless in their last 10 games (0-8-2). A potential doormat series for the Gophers, but again with this team you never know.:D

If Scooby can be optimistic for the holidays, I think you can too! At least for the Harvard series?

I want to see Scooby recycle that glass before the season ends, or how will we gauge the offseason?

Speaking of offseason, who can't wait to see Erik Haula in a Gopher uniform?
